Looking for some decent pistol cleaning spray.

I've been using Gunzilla for over a year now and it works great. I was using CLP previously, but kept getting complaints about the smell. Gunzilla works as well or better and doesn't have an offensive smell.

So many modern cleaners are "CLP's" that also lube and preserve that the line between a cleaner and lubricant isn't as clear as it used to be.

One of the instructors in a nationally known training facility uses non-chlorinated brake cleaner to cleanse and high temp wheel bearing grease for lube.

I use the high temp grease (Super Tech Multi Duty Complex Grease from Wal Mart - $4 for a 14 oz. tube) in my AR and it runs great. I haven't used it on my pistols, but can't see any reason not to other than that I haven't finished using up my remaining tubes of the $6 for 2 oz. specialty varieties I bought before I discovered the Wal Mart product.

I'm using the non-chlorinated brake cleaners (Walmart or O'Reilly generics), for grease I like the high temperature brake greases from Permatex. IMO though, any of the high temp /high pressure synthetic greases will protect a firearm until my great, great, great, great grandkids inherit the weapons.

I ran into the local distributor of Safari Charlie and was given a can to test out, now it is all I use, well along with Slide Glide for the rails on my Semi's. What I like is no petroleums and it has an orange smell so I clean my guns in the house. Initially I thought it was another one of those "miracle" cleaners and would just try it and be done, it is great at cutting the residue and lubes up the hard to get at places.

I believe he sells at guns shows as well, worth a try....

I've heard other folks who like that product too, but it's really pricey.

Gunzilla does everything SC does, isn't petroleum based, and doesn't stink up the house, but it's only $25 for a 16 ounce bottle, which lasts me about 2 years.

I'll take some hits on this one, I know. But here it is.

A few years ago, I was sold on MILITEC. Where I didn't use MILITEC, I used grease. On the back of the bottle were instructions to impart this synthetic, molecular bond to all types of metal in common use. Most notably, automobile engines.

Made sense to me. After all, this seemed the best oil-additive I could buy.

So I added 2oz. of MILITEC per quart of oil, as prescribed, to my vehicle that had just over 30K miles. I no longer own this vehicle, FYI.

It just so happened that the next weekend was a Farnam training course in Victoria, about a two-hour drive for me. Another great training experience, and I head back to Houston.

As I got close to Ft. Bend County, the "Check Engine" light goes on. I keep all my vehicles on-schedule for recommended maintenance, so this was a surprise.

Net message, the fuel injectors had become clogged and I had an $800-plus price to pay.

Now, I can't say that adding MILITEC to the oil--as prescribed by the package--is what caused my injection system to sludge and require expensive attention. But I can say that it is the only variable between a known-good state and that expensive check-engine light.

I have little wisdom in this matter. But if I did, it would be: "Seek out the 'best-of-breed' products for you particular requirement."

Am I willing to pay a premium for products designed specifically for firearms?

Yes, I am.

A small tube of TW25B grease will go a long way. I use the same company's aerosol spray on most moving parts. I use Hoppe's Elite cleaner. I use Wilson's UltimaLube as oil.

Can I save a buck or two by buying generic?

You betcha.

But I can't recommend it.

I have earned a lot about gun cleaning solvents and grease from reading these postings. For my input, which is usually worthless to the discussion, I use Hoppes #9 for cleaning and a drop or 2 of Gun Butter to lube.

Mirachem Gun Cleaner - very pleasant to use. Never seen it in any store but if you email them for a sample they will send you one free. My 4oz sample has lasted a while.

Also, I buy cheap toothbrushes and use those (dry) to brush out the majority of the residue - a packet of 5 for $1 from those dollar stores.

Since everyone is giving their lube preferences, I use Mobil-1 on the rails etc, and silicone grease on the sear+disconnect etc :-)
