Resataurant signs
I'm a new CHL licensee and am perplexed by the signs that I see at various restaurants etc. saying "Unlicensed carry of a weapon on these premises is a felony" or something to that effect. This does NOT conform to the 30.06 signage rule. Question: is licensed concealed carry OK in such a place? What are the legal ramifications?

Re: Resataurant signs
Licensed carry would be legal, unless the sign is a 51% sign which wont be the case at most if any restaurants, its my understnading that anyone who sells aclohol is required to have the unlicesnsed carry signs posted but I could be mistaken on that part.jmgroves wrote:I'm a new CHL licensee and am perplexed by the signs that I see at various restaurants etc. saying "Unlicensed carry of a weapon on these premises is a felony" or something to that effect. Here's a handy sign link for reference. The "unlicensed" (often referred to as the blue sign) is the third one down .... viewtopic.php?f=53&t=34571" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Resataurant signs
I guess all CHL classes are not equal. Signage was something that was covered in detail during the class I took. Are there just a lot of really bad instructors out there or are people sleeping through the classes?
To the OP...was signage covered in your class?

Re: Resataurant signs
My guess is there's plenty of both. Remember, the questions we see here are from the people smart enough to find this forum and ask questions. Think of all the neophytes who leave their new CHL class thinking they know everything they need to know.jmra wrote:I guess all CHL classes are not equal. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
Re: Resataurant signs
Being told a description of a flower, and actually seeing that flower, are two different experiences.
In the class I took, and I assume most classes, various signs are described, but until I saw one on this forum, I had never seen a 30.06 sign .... there are NONE in my city.
I later saw one at a gun show in another city and one at a hospital in yet another city; I've seen a total of two 30.06 signs.
I haven't seen a 51% sign at all, except on this forum; doubt I will. (My church serves a shotglass of wine once or twice a year for on premise consumption ... but it isn't sold )
Prior to the class, I never really read signs; I commend people who after class read them, and come here and ask ... wanting to be sure of what they read.
In class ... people are thinking about their picture, fingerprints, praying they qualify later when shooting; praying they pass the test. I know i remembered 51 and 30.06, but the signs which DO NOT AFFECT CHLs (gunbusters/blue signs) got less class time than what DOES affect CHLs ...and imho, that's how it should be. I brought up blue signs and 30.06 questions to my instructor during a break when in class he said H.E.B. can NOT post a 30.06 sign .... and I asked why not (he meant to say 51% in addition to the blue sign, sign but another student asked the question confusingly oslt and was trying to get class moving again to cover everything).
And, my first "day out" I went to Walgreens drug store, stood in front of the door ... reading signs prior to going to the bank walked past a gunbuster sign, , and went to a restaurant ... all the while, reading signs
Eventually, you'll just "recognize" them, like you do a stop sign...... there's really only two you need to recognize; 51% and 30.06 ..... but yeah, I remember standing outside Walgreens reading (some stores have like 50 different signs)
CAUTION Automatic Doors
Please return Carts
No unattended children in Store
Prosecutors will be shoplifted
Consumption of alcohol on this premises is a ...blah blah blah
The UNLICENSED possession ... blah blah blah
Kids eat free on Tuesdays
Try the 99 cent meal deal
Bananas, buy one get one free
I liked my class, maybe they did spend less time on things which do NOT affect CHLs, and more on what DOES affect CHLs ... but isn't that how it should be?
I'd have to search, but I may have asked that same question. I recall going into a restaurant in San Antonio, and upon seeing a sign, going back to leave my fanny pack in the car; then going back in sitting back down, READING the sign ... going back to my car ... putting on my fanny pack, going back in ... And having a great meal.
Now, I just "know"/"recognize" them ..... it's like when one first starts driving, you are so careful you overcompensate maybe ... but, you'll soon "recognize" signs.
Study the signs on that link given above.

Re: Resataurant signs
Thanks for the replies. Yeah my instructor was not very interested in signage, just the no-carry type of places. He did not cover the types of signs at all.

Re: Resataurant signs
That's a shame. My instructor had a slide presentation that showed just about every kind of sign you could imagine. You would think instructors would at least print some off the internet to pass around. Sounds like good instructors may be hard to come by.

Wow. That's...that's absolutely amazing.RPB wrote:Being told a description of a flower, and actually seeing that flower, are two different experiences.

I worked for well over a decade at three different buildings that were all valid 30.06. Most Fortune 500s I know of are 30.06 (so if you want a corporate job, there ya go). My bank is 30.06. My credit union is 30.06.
When Charles previously mentioned that certain legistation might lead to an increase in 30.06 signs, maybe this is an indication of why some disagreed...
Because they have never seen the flowers!

Re: Resataurant signs
True, some parts of Texas have few or none, others may have lots.
An indicator might be the "red/blue" County map lol
I'm in a weird city; the city doesn't like gun stores, most nearby cities don't either, but no one bans them except for a 51% club .... which went out of business last month.
I'm guessing many smaller towns don't put up signs, in 2 out of 3 hospitals in small towns, I saw "no smoking" and "Caution: guarded by attack chicken" but not even the sign they are "required" to have. The one near a huge metro anti-gun area, of course had signs.
No bank or anything here is posted except for a "gunbuster" and the clinic has a "guns are illegal here by State Law" printed on a sheet of paper taped to a window.
Restaurants and convenience stores and liquor stores post the blue sign,,, but I had to drive 70 miles (one way) to see a 30.06 sign.

Re: Resataurant signs
I know of a one place I've been to with a valid sign here in Lubbock...a hospital I used to work for. However, I've never seen the sign . I worked at an off-site clinic that just had a gun-buster sign, and I rarely went to the main hospital. In addition, I stopped working for them well before I got my CHL, so I never had a cause to look for it. Unfortunately, I am unable to carry to work now because my location is restricted currently by law.
Anyhow, the hospital is the only place in Lubbock I personally know that is posted. I know there are others, but I have never seen a valid 30.06 in the wild here in West Texas. Guess I just naturally don't go to those places. Basically, when I get off work, I carry anywhere I go. If I run into a 30.06 someday here, I'll probably be a little taken aback.
I do fondly look at one sign here in town. It's at the local Gander Mountain. It reads something to the effect that all firearms coming into the store for trade or repair need to be unloaded and checked in at the gun desk. However, the sign continues to read pleasantly that this does not apply to their customers who are legally licensed to carry a concealed firearm.
Thank God for conservative, rural West Texas . . Just one more reason I will probably never leave this place.
