I wish I could have had those "good ol' days". I can't help but sit in awe and marvel as my grandfather tells me stories of his upbringing. And I'm only 23. I long for a time when my (eventual)kids can get into trouble at school and I hear about it before they ever get home. And by the time they do, they've been properly whipped by every parent along the way, because they heard about it too.
My fear is, eventually these groups that claim to be fighting for human rights will no longer be around, because they will have destroyed our moral fabric and shredded our decency. When that happens, anarchy will have ensued and these activist groups will be brought down by the very criminals and low lives that they have been defending. Remember, Liberalism, taken to its inevitable extreme, is Communism. You can't hold an opinion of your own. You can't own property of your own. And you can't survive without the government telling you how to eat, sleep, dress, and work. Its a cold world we are headed for.
I have a great idea of how to turn it around; LawDog for President. Scroll down or do a quick search on the page for " Old political humour" and you'll see what I mean.

Re: Changing times
It wasn't 1973... it was 1995. And it wasn't a rifle. But I carried a knife on my belt just about every day of the year and the teachers that I had were constantly borrowing it. Why couldn't they be prepared like I was?300shooter wrote:Scenario: Jack pulls his pickup truck into school parking lot with rifle in gun rack.

Hey, that reminded me of a friend back in school who was an Eagle Scout. He had special permission to carry a pocket knife to school and all the teachers knew it. He never stabbed anyone, or threatened anyone. Just went on about his daily business. And this was in junior high about '97.

or we can just move to the UK, where they don't worry about such trivial tripe.
they have .22's to run in fear of!!!!
it boils down to people here have too much time on their hands.
I'll leave it at that, cause I know how strong opinions go over around this place.

Re: Changing Times
I Remember them too but some of it wasn't all that good. Maybe I'm the exception. But I didn't find the 70s so great.SC1903A3 wrote:I remember the good old days.
I was recovering from a couple of friends that were killed in Viet Nam, I was serving in the Army because the I had a low number. Lots of folks in my age group hated me just because of the uniform I was forced to wear. Inflation was horrendous eating away at my income faster that I could earn it. Cities were being torn apart by riots becaude of racial tension. Groups like the symbionese army and the black panthers were blowing up places every week.
And it was illegal to carry a concealed weapon in Texas. Things aren't perfect today, but our solders are better trained and not being killed quite as fast as then, we don't have a draft. and we seem to be doing a better job of hoding back the terrorist. I know I'm doing a lot better than in 1973... I think most are. I sure feel safer today than I did then. I think my children are safer, and more secure too.
The leftist might have done some damage, but I'm convinced that they aren't completely running things like they did in the 70s, and there has been some progress in the right direction.
I say this as an optimist. I think most things are better, and that our future and the future of our children is even brighter.

In the late 50's I actually took my Ruger 44mag to class to show my teachers. Nobody freaked out, most were very interested. My car set in the parking lot, unlocked and windows down, very often with rifles and pistols in the back seat. Yes things have changed, some for the better and others not so good.
I agree with Liberty. The late 60's to mid 70's were very bad times for the USA. Today's National Guard trains to replace regular Army units in overseas battles. In the 60's we trained to keep college students from burning down their campus.

Re: Changing Times
I didn't, either. We had the first resignation of a U.S. President, the first President who was not elected by the people, energy shortages, war in the Middle East (well, that hasn't changed), inflation, as you said. No thanks.Liberty wrote:Maybe I'm the exception. But I didn't find the 70s so great.

Certain things I'm glad to see changed, but I think people freak out way too easily over the weapons deal. I graduated in the mid 90s. Guys used to dig out their pocket knives to open their skoal cans. Teachers and principals were more concerned over the skoal than the knives.

That might be closer to what people would call a "Reagan Optimist"...Liberty wrote:I say this as an optimist. I think most things are better, and that our future and the future of our children is even brighter.
There's nothing wrong or untimely about that label...
