Driving to Birmingham in about 1 month

Howdy folks, I haven't been on here in a while (busy chasing my tail) and was just wondering if anybody had any specific alerts or experience passing thru LA and MS. From the DPS info, it seems we now have reciprocity with those states on my I20 route to Alabama. I'm just checking for any "gotchas" that are known.

I don't know of any gotchas for an interstate traveler. Don't go armed into casinos in Louisiana, and don't stop for drive-through daquiris.

I'm not sure about rules for restaurants serving alcohol in MS or AL. Hopefully someone will chime in.

In my opinion, Alabama has some of the best laws in the nation concerning concealed carry. There are virtually no places of limits. I know protests are prohibited, but you can only be charged if you are informed by a cop a protest is in progress and refuse to remove the weapon from the area. I think courthouses may be off limits as well, but as far as I can recall that is it--I know there is no prohibition on carry in restaurants or bars.

Even schools are OK for carry according to AL law--you only cannot carry there if you intend to do someone harm, so don't go into a school planning to kill someone and you should be good. I find that planning to kill someone is generally frowned upon anyway, so I try to avoid it.

I was looking through the Brady Center website the other day--something I try to avoid doing to often as it sends my blood pressure through the roof--and I thought that it was interesting that they were praising the AL CCW law because it doesn't "force" police to issue permits. Supposedly the way the Alabama statute is written they are actually a shall-issue state. However, as I understand it nobody has ever been denied if they pass the NCIC check (which is not even required for a permit to be issued). Anyhow, that hos absolutely no relevance to your question but I decided to share it anyway.

Edited to add: I forgot to mention that signs mean nothing in Alabama either. If you carry past a sign, the only way you can get in trouble if your weapon is found out and you refuse to leave.

Howdy there Longtooth, rest asured that both "Kims" will be with me on this trip :)

I'll be doing some contract work at a radio station and don't plan to go to any bars, schools, courthouses or casinos. If we do have to go out to a transmitter site, those are sometimes in a bad hood. Thanks for the info HIRUNDO82, no plans to kill anybody, not even those that need it ! I do plan
to eat my weight in BBQ while I'm there ! LOL

Anyone know why the conflict in information? I'm travelling through Alabama to Georgia tomorrow and would like to know if I need the "lock box."

It is fairly new we just got reciprocity a few weeks ago.


Packing.org is pretty slow updating itself and can't be relied on on for the latest and greatest information. This is an active group and it isn't likely that incorrect information would go unchallenged. Of course the ultimate authority is the the Great State of Alabama itself. I'd print out that web sight and take it with you.

"Texas Establishes Concealed Handgun License Unilateral Proclamation With Other States
August 8, 2006 Alabama
Note: Effective immediately, Governor Perry has issued a proclamation that allows persons with valid license to carry a pistol (concealed handgun licenses) from Alabama to carry in Texas. All Alabama license holders will be required to follow Texas law while carrying concealed in this state including age restrictions and type of weapon permitted. This proclamation will automatically trigger a reciprocal agreement. Texas concealed handgun license holders will be allowed to carry in Alabama and must follow Alabama law while in that state."
