Thinking about buying the Nikon D5000... thoughts?

I'm in the market for a new digital camera and I'm thinking about going with the Nikon D5000 DSLR.

The total price with tax would come to $744 at Best Buy.

I have a Nikon D90 and don't even come close to using all the features. You can't go wrong, with the D5000.

I don't know anything about that camera, but haven't you noticed Best Buy usually isn't?

I was semi-pro photog for a few a few years and own three Nikon DSLRS. Go with Canon or Nikon and you'll be fine. So much out there for accessories, extra lenses etc. with those two brands you can't go wrong.

Im more of a canon guy. I started very young with them. Both are fine and will serve you well
Imo canon has better glass in the high end "L" lens. Nikon is backwords compatable from what I remeber and the glass may be cheeper for it. A quick look on ebay can confirm that.

I personally own the D5000, and have done some amateur photography with it for people with great results. I have purchased two other lenses beyond the kit lens though which helped. But, even with the stock 18-55mm lens, you can get some great shots if you know just a little behind proper SLR technique. I don't think the D90 is worth it unless you have older Nikon lenses and need an in body motor (the D5000 does not have in body motor, so you have to buy lenses that have the motor in them). $744 is a pretty good price all in. I paid about $800 for mine when they first came out last year. I don't think you'd be disappointed. If you are new to photography on SLRs, you should really do some research for some tutorials to really get the most out of it.

seriously, I think both DSLR systems (Canon and Nikon) are great. But top-of-the-line Nikkor glass blows Canon out of the water for sharpness, clarity etc. Canon's electronics are probably better (but the margin is very small now) and they were first to put AF motors inside the lens almost two decades ago. But Nikon was make world-class photographic glass when Canon was competing with Xerox in the copy machine wars. Nikon's glass is in the same stratosphere as the best German glass from Leica etc.

I got one and it is a fantastic camera. Don't get it at Best [?] Buy, though as you can get a better deal on ebay if you are patient. I got a factory reconditioned body for < $500

I could care less about all the features; I was more interested in the image size.

The advantage I see with Nikon is that, with the exception of the early non-AI lenses (and, of course, their screwmount rangefinder lenses), you can mount any lens on any body and take pictures with it. So, if you have an old Nikon-mount lens that is just awesome and you don't want to part with it, you can stick it on your new DSLR body. Not so with Canon.
