Valid Signs
Apparently signage is not thoroughly covered in too many CHL classes.
A "sticky" depicting a valid 30.06 sign, and both a blue and a red 51% alcohol sign with a concise definition of each type sign could serve several purposes; e.g:
1. Clarify the exact wording, size, color and placement of a valid "no CHL guns allowed" on these premises notice,
2. Clarify the exact wording, size, color and placement of a valid "no CHL because of in situ alcohol consumption" notice,
3. Provide a handy and immediate future reference point for those who were never introduced to, nor did not understand these two fundamental responsibilities of a Texas CH licensee during their CHL classes, and;
4. Minimize the daily signage questions and debates on the forum.

In addition to this, I am working on a one page PDF with this kind of info. I hope it can be picked up by Instructors too...Pawpaw wrote:Sort of like this?

Re: Valid Signs
Great idea! For the 30.06 picture can I suggest having a common object like a quarter in the picture to show letter height for a legal sign.pbwalker wrote:In addition to this, I am working on a one page PDF with this kind of info. This will only hurt a little. What comes next, more so.

Re: Valid Signs
And the valid sign picture should have block letters (all caps) pointed out because that's a requirement as well which doesn't get much air play.

Hey Pawpaw. I missed it. Did you get the "1" removed from your user name or did someone have to do that for your?Pawpaw wrote:Sort of like this?

Why does one have to read through every item/forum on this site to find it? Given the almost daily questions on the signage questions, it seems to me that signage and this explanation is a subject/sticky unto itself?
Oh well....

If someone is new to CHL and goes to the New to CHL? forum, it's the first topic. It's a sticky.Oldgringo wrote:Why does one have to read through every item/forum on this site to find it? I noticed it by accident myself. I didn't even have to re-log in.C-dub wrote:Hey Pawpaw. I missed it. Did you get the "1" removed from your user name or did someone have to do that for your?Pawpaw wrote:Sort of like this?

Afterwards, I checked my email & found a friendly note from the man himself. You can't beat service like that... and free, to boot!
I would gladly pay for membership to this forum. It is the best Texas CHL resource I know of.

Good point! IF someone knew what they didn't know, they'd know to go in search of that missing information and might eventually stumble upon this "sticky"...within a larger forum.jester wrote:If someone is new to CHL and goes to the New to CHL? forum, it's the first topic. I suggest that there are many who don't know of the "sign" topic on the "New to CHL" forum. Otherwise, the sign discussions wouldn't go on for pages - week after week.

Re: Valid Signs
You make a valid point. When I first joined the forum, I was immediately drawn to the "New to CHL" subforum and happened to remember the sticky and thinking that was a great idea and a great place to put it. I'm sure it would do me good to go back and re-read that subforum again, now that I'm more comfortable with the whole thing.Oldgringo wrote:Good point! Although it stuck in my case, I can see where it wouldn't necessarily do so for everyone. There is a ton (actually several tons) of information here and learning everything is a particularly daunting for the beginner. Heck, I know I'm still learning a bunch every day.

Me too, Pawpaw. As I've said before,this forum has taught me far far more than was even mentioned, let alone covered, in my CHL class.

Re: Valid Signs
Besides, even though we may think we understand the subject when it is covered in class, as we think about it later, "what if" questions arise, as do "did the instructor really say" questions. The discussions on this forum provide a great sounding board for that type of question, as other members chime in with their experiences and thoughts.Oldgringo wrote:Me too, Pawpaw. Re: Valid Signs
It also seems that folks are trying really hard to come up with 'loopholes' in the signage laws, which end up being opinions on how to justify ignoring or invalidating a sign. In my renewal class my CHL instructor gave us an example of one such loophole to invalidate a 30.06 sign, and through discussion on this board, it was pretty much determined he was wrong. Makes me think that some other things he taught, that made me go 'Hmmm', may not be so true either. That's why I really enjoy the discussions on this forum.

I believe there is safety in numbers..
numbers like: 9, .22, .38, .357, .45, .223, 5.56, 7.62, 6.5, .30-06...

Re: Valid Signs
A requirement that the sign be in all caps is not included in the statute. "Block letters" is not the same as "all caps". Block letters generally just means no cursive or script style of type font.Hoi Polloi wrote:And the valid sign picture should have block letters (all caps) pointed out because that's a requirement as well which doesn't get much air play.
Of course the "legal definition" of block letters is up to courts/judges and interpretation, but here's a start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_letters" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
As long as the sign is not hand-written and not written in some difficult-to-decipher type font (like "Old English" or similar), I don't believe it matters if it's written with both upper case and lower case letters.
