Range report: Best Shot

#1

Post by canvasbck »

This was my second trip to Best Shot. On my first trip, it was the day before their grand opening, so there were boxes all over the lobby area and they were all pretty busy preparing for the GO.

Today, I went with Mrs. Canvasbck, my nephew who's a LEO, and his wife aka my niece. Some of you may remember this range from it's previous owners when it was kinda run down. The current owners have done a really good job of fixing up the place, and there is even a place for Mrs. Canvasbck to watch some TV on the rare occasion that she runs out of ammo before I do. The soundproofing that they have done in between the range and the lobby is quite impressive, you can just hear that there are shots being fired but barely. It's kinda nice to have the windows in between the lobby and the range so you can laugh at your buddies while they try a feeble attempt at gun pong. Hint, if you are going to play gun pong, stay AWAY from lanes 9, 10, the fan bounces off the wall on that end and the longest pingpong ball does not stop swinging back and forth..........ever.

Anyway, on to the range. I was primarily shooting the Beretta 96, while the wife was shooting her FNP 9. I have to brag on the wife, her groups seem to shrink with each trip to the range. She's getting much better, she fired about 120 rounds today, some rapid, and 90% were inside the 7 ring.

I drug out the 500 S&W today since this is one of the few ranges that will allow magnums (sand backstop). I fired it, then handed it off to my nephew to try the hand cannon. He fired one shot and all he said afterwards was "I hate you". I didn't fire it any more since the range was starting to fill and it is kinda rude to fire that behemoth at an indoor range while others are trying to shoot.

Best Shot will also allow you to do some draw and fire work as long as you let them know ahead of time so they can place you in one of the stations at the ends. This was my first oportunity to shoot the Beretta from my new supertuck. I have to report that I am even more pleased with the ST now than I was before. Not only is it an extremely comfortable IWB holster, it is quite pleasant to draw, fire, and reholster. All new guns from now on will get a matching ST. I will probably hold off on getting one for the .500

Overall, I would have to say that I am impressed with Best Shot :thumbs2: :thumbs2: . The staff was very nice, the lobby area was nice and comfortable. I will probably be returning tomorrow night for tactical shooting with the PSC folks. I'm also thinking of putting together a gun poker tournament to be held there in the near future, looks like fun.

The grand opening was fun last week and I decided to join. Wife and kids all shot, and I won one of the the gun pong events with a Walther P22/Laser. Matt had a 10/22 set up on a lane and my wife (non gun person) had great fun shooting punching holes in clays and spinning metal prairie dogs . I was relegated to reloading for her for about half an hour. :fire As far as I know, my five year old holds the record as youngest shooter on the lanes!

The tactical shooting on Sunday is also very instructional for a newbie like me and fm2 is a great teacher. You may want to double check the tactical shooting session this Sunday. fm2 and I will be at our kids champion swim meet tomorrow in Texas City. Not sure about him, but I will probably be done for the day after the swim meet. Go Stingrays! :thewave

Do they allow shotguns at all? I'm going there tomorrow for the first time since the remodel and would like to bring my more than just my pistol.

I would give them a call and ask. I kind of doubt that they'll allow shotguns in there. Not because their berms couldn't stop the pellets, but you can't control where all of the pellets end up. Who knows though.....

It's a great place and the owner is a top notch guy. He offers the best price I've found for FFL transfers.
