Tactical Firearms - My New Favorite Hangout

#1

Post by skub »

Just spent 40 minutes doing real life shooting simulations at Tactical Firearms in Katy - active shooter, CHL, and miscellaneous situations. I only got through 30 of the 350 simulations that they have available. Looks like I am going to have to go back again... and again... and again...
:woohoo

Cost is $20 for 15 minutes, or $30 for 30 minutes.

The guys are very friendly and helpful. If they are able to carry out their plans, the place will be amazing. They said they are looking for property to build a 15 lane indoor range that will accommodate anything up to the Barrett .50 sitting on the safe. :eek6

Their website is http://www.tacticalfirearms.us

From their webpage -

"We are located at 636 South Mason next to Jacks
Carpet, We offer all handguns and rifles at wholesale
pricing along with real life shooting simulators that had
previously only been available for Military and Law
Enforcement. We are also a class III dealer and offer
FFL transfers for only $35. "

Next Sunday they are having a speed/accuracy tournament - winner gets a $250 in store credit.

The only downside I see in the above review
is "FFL transfers only $35".

That seems like about the most expensive FFL
transfer price I've seen, IMHO.

SIA

Getting to be something of a norm around these parts too. I've found they can vary quite a bit (from $20 up to $40) so it's worth searching your area.

There is a member here that does transfers for $20 in the Sugar Land area. Its only twenty minutes or so from Katy and he is as nice and friendly as can be. Not saying the guys at Tactical are not, but if the $35 is a hang up for you there are other avenues. But $20 is the cheapest I have seen as high as $45 at Fountain Firearms.

I won't pay more than $20 for a transfer. I'll wait for a FTF deal instead of paying that much to a FFL.

However, I'm interested in the simulations. Is it like a big video game or something like the FATS simulator?

It is a computer controlled simulation where you are standing in front of a life-size screen using a laser pistol to shoot at video of real people. (For $5 more, you can use a pistol or AR that has CO2 blowback action.) You choose the scenario you want to run from the list on the computer, and the simulation starts. The first ones I did were active shooters in a school setting, with you in the role of a LEO. When you encounter the BG, you have to decide whether and when to shoot. If you make a good shot, he (or she) drops. (In one scenario, I had to drop a kid that looked to be about 12, but was raising a gun to shoot me.) If you miss, the scenario continues. Once the scenario is over you can replay it, and markers will appear on the screen where each of your shots hit.

In some of the CHL scenarios, I ended up choosing not to shoot, in the spirit of some of the discussions I have followed in this forum. One of these scenarios really caught me off guard, but created a kind of situation I had not thought of, but which could easily occur in real life. I don't want to say more and ruin the experience for those that may go try it out.

One of the other things I was able to practice in the simulations was muzzle control. Sometimes you are part of a team, and in many cases there were innocents around.

Because there was no one waiting, Jeremy was pretty relaxed with the amount of time I spent on the simulator - paid for $30 minutes, shot closer to 40, and the only reason I left was because I needed to go.

Edited to clarify that the characters are not computer generated, but real people. In fact, I understand that at least some of the videos were shot locally. And they can add more as they want to.

looks like a cool place, I will have to try it one day. I went to the youtube link on the sight and saw what I suppose are short clips of the simulations?
