FANNIN CO., TX - A 13-year-old Fannin County boy, hospitalized Wednesday night, after being shot with a shotgun by his brother.
The Fannin County Sheriff's Office says it happened at a home north of Savoy, near Highway 82 and County Road 1235.
Lt. Daryl Parker tells KXII a 16-year-old was cleaning a 12-gauge shotgun when it discharged, sending buckshot through the wall, which hit the 13-year-old in the hand and stomach.
The younger boy was taken to TMC, suffering from serious, but non-lifethreatening injuries.
The boys' parents were at work at the time of the shooting.
Parker says the shooting was accidental and no one else was hurt.

Seems to me that firearms are the most dangerous when they are being "cleaned". If people would stop "cleaning" their guns the number of ND's would drop significantly!7075-T7 wrote:"Unloaded" weapons strike again. Very unfortunate.

Wow. My parents live less than a mile from there. Savoy is a very small town...I'll ask my folks if they know any more details.

Yeah, "cleaning" a gun seems to be the excuse du jour these days. I'm betting that's not what was going on. I don't know of any shotgun that requires pulling the trigger during the cleaning process. More likely he was playing/fiddling with the gun.hheremtp wrote:Seems to me that firearms are the most dangerous when they are being "cleaned". Agreed...plus it's hard to run a batch through the barrel when it's loaded.NcongruNt wrote:Yeah, "cleaning" a gun seems to be the excuse du jour these days. I'm betting that's not what was going on. cleaning is synonymous with "messing around with"... anybody who cares enough to clean their weapon wouldn't be that much of a bonehead.hheremtp wrote:Seems to me that firearms are the most dangerous when they are being "cleaned". Re: Another ND
I agree with the statement that CLEANING=MESSING AROUND. We all know that accidents happen, but still I have never pulled a trigger cleaning a gun regardless of how clean I want it. I do know someone, and was watching him when it happened, who was unloading a 30-06 (in a safe direction as always instructed) that went off without pulling the trigger. He was racking them out of the mag through the breech instead of dropping them out of the bottom. One hand on the barrel grip and one on the bolt. Scared him half to death.... He destroyed the gun the next day. Not exactly sure about the mechanics of why it happened but I guess I think you have a better chance of doing that with a bolt action than a any type of shotgun.
