I can understand a desire for factory ammo and not severely modified pistols (ok pistols less so). We're generally dealling with instructors who don't kow you from Adam. We've all seen range fun filled antics in the past, plus persons can be nervous creating further events. Indeed She Who Must Be Obeyed, who is a lethally crack shot, tried to load the rounds into her clip backwards in the test , only to later get a perfect shooting and written score.

They could be seeking to reduce potential accidnets with double loads etc. Having said that, for our test there was none of that. We did have a guy bring home loads and the only issue was when the instructor got distracted with talking about reloading.

Totally OT but is there any reason at all for the regulation about testing with a revolver will generate a license for revolvers only? Thats always bugged me in a big way.

The SA-NSA distinction is a holdover from the way that security guards are licensed. They have to qualify with each type of weapon that they want to use.

It's pointless. No other state has such a requirement (though some require you to qualify with the exact handgun that you're going to carry).

I agree no reloads and ACC requires you use their ammo (which looked reloaded). Course doesnt have time for squibs or double loads. I figured the SA distinction was to ensure you could operate an SA properly. Revolvers dont have all the levers buttons, switches, lights, etc.

Funny, the way I interpreted the instructor's reaction was that we're dealing with instructors that know little about firearms. Since they lack they knowledge to make informed decisions about which modifications are safe, they simply don't allow any.

Anyone so ill informed would not be my instructor.

The simple solution is to run the range test on a schedule. If your gun fails, make it work. If you don't get lead on target on time, you don't get the points. If you drop enough points to fail, then you can take the test some other time. That's more leniency than a VCA is going to offer IRL.

I have a no reload rule on my range now, after having a student almost ruining his personsal firearm and then asking to use one of my loners. Then when my handgun started malfunctioning, I took a look at his ammo and determined they were handloads (and poorly reloaded at that), and from that point forward I do not allow handloads!! I also inspect every handgun before to make sure it is safe and functional!!

I had a guy behind the counter at Academy tell me that you had to qualify with only some sort of 'federal approved ammo', which had to be made in USA and could only be Winchester WB and a few others, the Monarch and Blazer Serbian stuff was banned from qualifying. He said it had to do with some lobbyist and government contract stuff....

Funny thing is I was buying .380, its not like there was a selection to sell me on something. The WWB was the first .380 they had seen in months. Of course I was going to buy it.

I ended up qualifying with crap monarch 9 in my CZ, and hit 249/250. Our CHL instructor had a policy against .380, but emphacized it was only his oppinion, because there's too many pocket .380s that are difficult to shoot, and they had 30 loaner glocks for free.

That sounds like the list of approved ammo for the instructor's course in Austin. They want you to use ammo that meets SAAMI specifications. As far as I know, there is no formal restriction regarding ammo used by students. Instructors may have their own rules.
