I find it ridiculous that people drive around sucking up exhaust fumes, brake dust and other pollution all day then if they smell a little tobacco smoke in passing they get belligerent. Next time you are stuck in traffic behind a truck and your car is full of exhaust fumes, get out, march right up there and tell the driver what you think. :mad5

Very few buildings allow indoor smoking any more. Rest assured you will not get cancer tomorrow from smelling a little tobacco smoke from the guy you pass on the street.

I have to wonder if the amount of “third hand smoke” is significant enough to have any affect. I also have to wonder if this “study” is similar to “studies” of handgun violence cited in an effort to enact more restrictive gun laws.

I don’t drink so it would not bother me if a 500% tax was placed on all alcoholic beverages. After all how many people do alcoholism and DWI kill and injure every year? How about banning fatty foods? They contribute to obesity, heart attack and stroke and raise insurance rates. I know three people that suffer migraine headaches triggered by strong perfume, aftershave or cologne. Let’s ban those.

Now having said that, a lot of “studies” have been done and articles published to demonize smokers. Sound like gun ownership? States and the federal government have added huge taxes on cigarettes. In this case taxation is not being used for the original purpose, to raise revenue. It is being used to control people’s behavior. Sound like ammunition taxes some states want? States and individuals have sued tobacco manufacturers. Sound familiar? The common theme here is if you can’t ban it, litigate or regulate it out of existence. :rules:

Let’s be careful what we jump up and want to ban. There are always others that want to ban what you do.
God Bless America, and please hurry.

All throughout this thread I was thinking about tossing in the exhaust fumes thing, and then VoiceofReason has to go rob me of that pleasure...

But seriously guys, if someone can smoke 2 packs a day and die at 90, then I very much doubt that your 3rd hand smoke off the walls are going to have any noticeable impact on your lifespan.

That having been said, the only people who have ever complained about the fumes my soldering lets off are smokers :headscratch

No but it can make you obese, give you a heart attack or stroke and raise my insurance rates.

I wonder how many fat people that had heart attacks are hanging around in there with the old smokers.
God Bless America, and please hurry.

I was referring to my grandmother, marksiwel, not just making up some imaginary old smoker person. Though I'll gladly admit that's not the norm, it does make it look like tertiary smoke can't be that bad if first hand smoke for decades doesn't get the job done in a timely manner 100% of the time.

Don't get me wrong, I think smoking's not a wise decision, and an annoyance. I'm just so rarely inconvenienced by it, that I don't really care to try legislating it away.

This reminds me of that joke about how health nuts are going to feel stupid one day on their death bed dying of nothing. :smilelol5:

Oh, and for what it's worth, I'm sure there are a lot of non-smokers in the graveyard too. On a long enough timeline everyone's survival rate drops to zero.

Whether the subject is smoking or anything else - there are those who feel they know what's best for all - ah, as long as "What's Best For All" doesn't materially affect them...

Those who would appoint themselves as knowing what's best for all are part of our existing and growing "Nanny-State".

Most of us value our individual freedoms and want to keep them, even if at times those freedoms like smoking or owning guns or jumping out of perfectly good airplanes or scuba diving or... isn't universally approved of, cuz hey, they may cause others to feel uncomfortable or gosh, make insurance rates go up, maybe...

Only if they raise the rates for the fat people...but unfortunately, that's not the case.

Majority rules I guess.

Also they raise the rates because they are JERKS! Its all about money, they raise the rates because they raise the rates. If they could they would take your DNA and then raise your rates. They would raise your rates based on race if they could. they would raise your rates because you are a gun owner if they could.

Its like abortion, I dont like it but I dont think they should be able to pass laws against it. I like dont like smoking and dont think they should pass laws against it, but they do need to compansate for the health hazards it does create, like this third hand smoke they mention in the article.

Yeah, but I think the problem there is, a lot of us think that the third hand smoke thing is about as credible as anthropogenic global warming or all the "guns are evil" "studies" that the antis put out.

I gotta believe 3rd hand smoke is a hazard, I believe that we do pollute a lot and that it effecting us (Look at the number of cancers and increase in birth defects) is it global warming? Maybe not, but is reducing pollution a bad thing?
