Some things CHL Holders should NEVER do

#1

Post by klinejg »

One of our local colorful individuals decided to set up a coned-off section of the road (on a corner!) to let his kids play in the street that leads though the development to my house. He sits out front and drinks to excess and yells at people he deems are driving too fast though his "protected" area. On this particular occaision he chose to throw his full wine glass on my wife's car and scream at her as she drove by.

I went down to talk to him (dumb, dumb, dumb -- talk to a drunk with a stoned wife -- good luck!). He informed me that he had a CHL and was going to get his gun -- twice! Now, folks, I certainly have one as well (but was not carrying at the time) and would never give up that surprise and personal element to anyone unless I intended to take action.

I did the only appropriate thing I could do and called League City's finest to have a chat with the gent. The policeman was very professional and did talk with him. I chose not to press charge -- this time.

Lessons learned: it's stupid to threaten with having a CHL. It's a real good way to lose it. Drinking and guns (or threats of guns) can get you free rent in Huntsville. De-escalate and call the police. Like the policeman said, we don't get a badge by getting a CHL. On a side note, my wife's oldest son is a sergeant-selectee with the Houston police department. I haven't had the chance to discuss this with him, but will in the near future.

Should not have a CHL either. He will probably be drunk someday and shoot someone! That looks bad for all of us!

klinejg, you did the best thing imaginable by calling the police. He's a nut and should be considered as such. You just can't reason with a drunk. Threatening to get a gun? Phew. He sounds like a powder keg waiting for an excuse to explode.

pressing charges or not is your decision to make .
i would have probably pressed charges .

it sounds like this is an on going problem and stronger legal action needs to occur .

Hate to say this, but why werent you carrying? He had an excuse because he was drinking (although from your comments, I doubt that that was what was stopping him, ha ha)

Seriously though, I carry 24/7....it is the ONLY way to live....especially given that your neighbor sounds like he is a couple french fries short of a happy meal. He sounds like he is the type of individual that you would WANT to be armed for. I mean, really, sitting out getting tanked throwing wine (I am assuming he was drinking it from a box, ha ha) glasses at peoples' cars.

I would have pressed charges. Set the precedence that this kinda stuff aint gonna fly. And please, stay armed 24/7.

He may have been lying about the CHL. This guy has some cloudy judgment between blocking a public roadway, public intoxication, and assault (throwing a glass of wine at your wife's car). Seems hard to believe this fellow has never been in trouble before.

+1

Unfortunately, people like this often take the talking-to with no real action as evidence that you won't really do anything, and escalate their behavior afterward. If he's already throwing things at passing vehicles, somebody could get hurt next time.

Well let's see, I live down FM517 from you. So what part of League City I should avoid?

What neighborhood was this in? I'm on the east side of town. I would also be pressing charges, no point in taking it easy on a neighbor like that.

Press charges. Any and all that may apply. Blocking a right of way, communicating threats, public intoxication, possible child endangerment, vandalism, whatever may apply. I'll bet there's more than one......check any and all that may apply.

This guy is an escalation waiting to happen. He's looking for it, and when it does, there may be some innocent injuries.

Based on the description of the guy, I was surprised to read that he had a glass for his wine.

shoulda pressed charges, what if he goes farther next time? At least there would be a record if this time didn't straighten him up any. You can't just warn people anymore, they don't get it. And probably won't ever.
