How do i carry a handgun?

#1

Post by gbjr08 »

I have a question for anyone educated about cocealed carry permits. I would like to know if there is any possible way i can carry a handgun. I am only 20, however i feel it necessary to carry a firearm due to the large sums of money i carry for my job. I am a junior accountant and carry very large sums of money for client to make deposits for them sometimes in the six figures. I feel that in doing this it is necessary to carry a weapon for safety purposes. If someone could please help me in finding this out i would really appreciate it.

I suggest you get the best OC/Pepper spray you can buy and be careful until you are 21.

Hi gbjr08, welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of information here, and a lot of good knowledgeable people here to help answer your questions.

There is only one exception that allows someone under the age of 21 to get a concealed handgun license, and that is if they are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, and can show proof of same.

The law is very strict that no one can get a CHL unless they are age 21 or over. Sorry.

While it may not help all of the time, I will point out that there is no minimum age in the Motorist Protection Act. You may legally carry a handgun in your car if you meet the other restrictions (not a felon or convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence, not a gang member, not committing any other crime). The weapon must also stay concealed.

I strongly recommend you go to a CHL class even though you cannot apply quite yet. It will help you understand the laws and the responsibilities involved. It will also get you ready for the day you turn 21.

And, while you are conscientious about trying to protect the money entrusted to you, I also strongly urge you to check into your employer's policies. Many employers do not want their employees armed and would prefer you just give up the money. Their logic is that the insurance will replace the money while nothing can replace a life, which is a possible problem if you do resist the robbery. I have no problem with their philosophy if the money is all that is subject to being lost, but some robbers do not stop there. Check what your boss says before arming yourself.

I think by FEDERAL law, you are NOT allowed to possess a handgun if you are under 21, period. The MPA says states as long as a person "is not prohibited by law from possessing a firearm". IANAL though.

I think that is purchase a handgun until you are twentyone. Possession is another matter.

This is incorrect. You can possess one. You can buy one from a private seller.

You just can't purchase one from an federally licensed firearms dealer (FFL).

The same goes for handgun ammo.

Furthermore, the federal prohibition on juveniles (under 17) possessing handguns is never prosecuted because the feds know that it would be struck down.

To gbjr08, welcome to the forum.

TxRVer's advice about a shotgun is good. It doesn't have to be concealed, and you can carry it outside the vehicle (though carrying it into a bank would not be a good idea).

In addition to Steve's mention of the MPA, there is old case law saying that you can carry a weapon if you are carrying a large amount of cash. However, you can't just carry around a bundle of cash and a handgun everywhere.

If you are an employee, and your employer requires you to transport cash, are you getting paid enough to risk your life? The kind of money that you are talking about really needs to be handled by armed guards with appropriate equipment (not just a roscoe).

I question the judgement of employer's or the like who entrust large amounts of cash to an individual without providing any means of protection. I don't know what the OP's personal situation is, but they might want to discuss the subject.

EDIT: In essence I generally agree with the post immediately preceeding mine.

it is not on a daily basis that i carry cash but as i said i am a junior accountant and in the need of getting cash from one bank account to another in time to make payroll and not having the time to wait on a bank to do a wire transfer i see where they feel it is necessary. so i am legally allowed to carry a handgun in my vehicle as long as concealed? my employeer is aware of the situation of me inquiring about a handgun he said it is up to my descression. He feels that i should protect myself in anyway i feel necessary he himself carries a handgun. As you stated money can be replaced and life cannot but also as stated most people will not stop with just the money they are likely to kill the witness carrying the cash especially if they are getting away with a large sum of money. i appreciate all of the help.

Banking transfers happen at the speed of light...electrons. Done by the billions every day. And the figures that you mention would put your firm on a first name with someone that could and would do that for you.
