From the very first post in this thread:
Age: dangerously close to 40
Gender: male
Profession/school status: Graphic Designer/Photographer--Bachelor of Journalism, photojournalism concentration, UT
Marital status: married
Years CHL: 0
Carry guns/equipment: It'll be a 1911 of the Taurus variety for me.

My intention is to qualify with my 1911, too. Is 45acp overkill for a CHL class? Maybe I can borrow a 9mm...

Welcome to the forum.

You can use whatever pistol you shoot best with for the CHL test (at least .32 caliber, of course). Or whatever ammo you can find. Better start looking now. :grumble

I've got plenty of 45 for the test and oddly enough, the last time I was there, my FFL told me he would rent me a Jericho 9mm if I wanted it for the test. He said he would supply the ammo for it, too. But, I've got several hundred rounds through the 1911 so I'm familiar with the way it feels and shoots. I've got a few days to make up my mind, I guess.

I personally would use a pistol for a test only if I had put thousands of rounds through it, especially going from the single-action .45 to the double-action 9. The triggers are very different.

The cost of 9 mm and .45 are probably pretty close now. I wouldn't know. I haven't bought any since last October. It's only 50 rounds, anyway.

I'd love to use the pistol I've had for more than 20 years and put thousands and thousands through, but a Ruger MkII won't pass the caliber requirement...
Thankfully I've been to the range with the 1911 a bunch. So, it's the 1911 for me. Decision made based on experienced input! :thumbs2: Thanks, seamus!

You're welcome. I hope it works out.

You almost have to positively try to fail. Legally blind people have passed.

We see lot's of .45's in CHL class. But then, we see lot's of .380's too(or at least we did when you could find the ammo!) But, if you want to use a 9mm, you can use one of our Glocks or S&W M&P.

See ya Monday morning!

Welcome Jose, Santiago, and Flylow.

If you haven't been visiting the forum very long before joining try not to stay up too late reading all the great information here. I had been reading a lot before joining, so I don't stay up too late any more. Sometimes I just can't help it, though.
