Re: Opinion on Carry at a mall near me
I'd rather sit through a root canal than go to the mall. If the Longview mall is the only place that sells something, then I really don't need it.

Re: Opinion on Carry at a mall near me
Thanks Charles for the very insightful response. This just reinforces my feeling that I probably wouldn't be able to make it as a politician! I'm glad you're the one that's leading the charge.Charles L. Cotton wrote:When HB2909 passed in 1997 creating TPC §30.06, we succeeded in establishing a requirement for a "big, ugly sign." The vast majority of property owners who would post a small "no guns" sign won't even think of posting a 30.06 compliant sign because it just looks terrible on their building. If we were to reopen the 30.06 sign issue, especially in the current political climate in Austin, I think we wouldn't like the result. It's far more likely that the "big, ugly sign" would be replaced with something much smaller and only require English. This would be the trade-off for requiring a small, less-intrusive sign at every entrance.ClarkLZeuss wrote:Grrr, I know. But it should! Especially now that they changed the 51% rule to require signs at all entrances. This, I think, should be next on our agenda to bring to the Capitol. What do you think, Charles?nitrogen wrote:The law does not say all entrances need to be posted.
There has been a lot of turnover in the Legislature since 1997, but those who are fully educated about this issue know we really pulled off something good for CHL's and not so good for anti-gun property owners. There would be no support for a stand-alone bill to repeal it, or even change the sign requirement, but if we opened the door, then tweaking it would be much more palatable.
The bottom line is 1) there are very few compliant 30.06 signs; 2) if you know the property is posted with a 30.06 compliant sign then you have received effective notice and can be prosecuted; and 3) proving you are aware of a 30.06 compliant sign may or may not be difficult to prove by the property owner.

My (limited) experience with judges is that they don't like smart alecks. If you're in their court for a 30.06 violation and you say "but judge, I went through the door without the sign" (implying that you knew the other entrances are posted), you're going to lose.
Unfortunately, the hood rats in the mall near my work (Valley View Mall), won't stop for a 30.06 sign anyway :(

I don't recall Valley View being posted 30.06. I used to frequent that mall back when the arcade was still is business - now I haven't been in months. I miss the arcade, but I certainly do not miss the rest of that place.

Re: Opinion on Carry at a mall near me
I have now contacted every business that is in the mall that I could find an email address for and I may end up sending letters to the ones that don't have websites. I'm sure I am wasting my time but it does feel good to voice my displeasure with the situation. Will let you all know if I get anything back.

Interested if you get any reply except form letters from the big anchor stores.bobbyb0322 wrote:I have now contacted every business that is in the mall that I could find an email address for and I may end up sending letters to the ones that don't have websites. Re: Opinion on Carry at a mall near me
Thats kinda what I am thinking. I am sure these letters go to some customer service at their main location. I'm thinking about sending actual letters to the stores addressed to the store manager as well. Also I'm getting all of my friends who have CHL's to do the same. I'm even thinking about writing a letter to our local newspaper. I have some free time, might as well use it constructively.roberts wrote:Interested if you get any reply except form letters from the big anchor stores.bobbyb0322 wrote:I have now contacted every business that is in the mall that I could find an email address for and I may end up sending letters to the ones that don't have websites. Well, it sounds like it's going in the right direction, at least. Non-committal but that's to be expected. Who knows, you may affect a change for the better. Good job bobby!

Re: Opinion on Carry at a mall near me
I received a response from the District Manager for Dillards. Looks like it is at least making the rounds.
I am in receipt of your letter as I supervise the group of stores to which
the Longview store belongs. Thank you for taking the time to write. I
have forwarded your email to our Real Estate office so that they can take
a look at the information you have provided. I do not know if there is
anything we can do, but it is now in their hands.
Sincerely,
Mark Gastman
Vice President
District Manager

Re: Opinion on Carry at a mall near me
I'm really suprised you got even these replies, Bobby. Maybe you can get the policy changed for all CHL's at your mall.
But, Captian, that was a cruel joke with that video!!

Re: Opinion on Carry at a mall near me
If anyone is in the Longview, Tyler area that reads this I would encourage you to write the mall and every business in it. It doesn't take very long and the results I have gotten so far are far more positive than I expected. If these places are bombarded with letters / emails from the concerned public and they realize that they might lose customers over this it could have an effect. If I don't have a response from the mall or certain other businesses at the mall in a week, I will be resending the email. Persistence can pay off.

I just spent as much time watching that wonderful 70's looking Canadian video as I would spend at the Longview mall. But then again. I try to stay on my side of the Sabine River as much as possible.
