Cities improperly posting 30.06 signs?

City of Houston Public Library building downtown has what looks to be a compliant 30.06 sign. It has big white letters on tinted windows in both Spanish and English on both front entrances. It also has a gun buster sign. I don't believe it is a legal ban unless it has some designation for school field trips.

I was there this week and the text isn't compliant. Also like others said it's government property.

Do you happen to know if there are metal detectors at this location? The Clayton Library is doing the same thing and I'm speaking with them about it. They have metal detectors at the front so I can't just ignore the sign. (not that I would....) Does anyone know if this is standard across all of the City of Houston Libraries?

The detectors at the door are most likely not metal detectors but RF detectors. Sadly the Library has to guard against theft just like everybody else.

However, case law makes it easier in the future for everyone else. Just gotta find someone to be the guinea pig test case

I have to point out that having charges dropped or being found not guilty does no good except for the defendant in that case.

Case law is established when a conviction or other trial-court decision is either upheld or overturned by an appeals court.

There is also the risk that the case will go against our interest. Appeals courts sometimes make decisions that seem wrong to the average person and even to legal scholars.

I didn't even think of that!! That library actually has to be especially careful with theft because many of their materials can't be replaced easily (geneology information). I'm feeling a little dumb right now for not thinking of that so I might have to wear some HUGE ear rings and an arm full of bangle bracelets in there just to find out!

Most metal detectors detect ferrous metals (iron and steel). Carry a wrench in your pocket to see if whatever they have can detect it.

Most libraries have CheckPoint theft-prevention systems, just like retail stores. However, I wouldn't be surprised if a downtown library had metal detectors based on the problem of homeless people using them for shelter.

I have carried into the central branch library in downtown Houston with no problems. They reserve the right to check bags but I suspect they profile because I have never seen them search someone with good personal hygiene if they didn't set off the book alarm. I haven't been to the Clayton genealogy center down the block so I don't know if they have different security measures.

The fact that it is a school makes it off-limits to CHL holders regardless of signage.

The sign is not even close to being a valid 30.06 sign.

I went to the Carrollton Senior Center this weekend and saw a big sign on the front and rear doors that said "no handguns allowed" I chuckled to myself as I walked past them and told my wife I was going to ask at the front desk if that meant I could bring my AR with me next time...

You jest, but, it would be fully legal to openly carry an AR into there (at least until they told you to leave )

I saw this sign at Lupe Tortilla Mexican Restaurant at I-10 and Beltway 6 near Katy. The way I read this sign, it just says if you don't have a license, you can't carry a concealed handgun, so obviously the sign means nothing for a licensed CHL holder right? I am assuming the restaurant gets almost all of their revenue from food.

That's how I interpret it. There's one of those signs on my local convenience store glass doors. As I interpret it, as long as you have a CHL and are concealed(as you have to be, per law), you are ok to go in.

Anybody else agree with that?

I agree - that's the sign we want to see - interpret as CHL's welcome.

I like those signs. They indicate awareness to me.
