Carry at a gun show

This is where I throw a hypothetical in...

You go gunshow...

You carry loaded pistol to gun show...

Can you render the "gun" unloaded at that time, in front of the zip-tie patrol and proceed with your business???

My first reaction would be no, because in most gunshows, you cannot combine on your person, ammo and firearms to shoot it, on you, at the same time...At least thats what I have been able to gleen from all the mish-mash over the years...

But "if" you were able to do this anyway, and you are on your way out...Should you re-arm the same way as you unloaded in front of the zip-tie patrol???

But see the point of needing to reduce the risk of "failure to conceal" here in Texas???

I just end up locking it up in the vehicle and going in...Keeps me from having to dissassemble, unload etc etc...

Janelle and I went to the GRB for a gun show several years ago and she carried loaded into the entrance then proceeded to table for strap. She told the officer it was loaded and he said sort of loudly "HOT". He asked for the gun and he unloaded it, put the 5 rounds of .38 special into a cup and gave her a claim ticket with a number on it.

He didn't seem to have any problems with the loaded weapon, no speech or grunts, but he didn't appear to have a warm fuzzy. I think it was probably just having to keep tract of 5 bullets till we left.

Again, this was several years ago, not sure if it would be any different today. She now just opts to either leave it in the car or unload and leave the ammo in the car. Just easier.

The same thing happened at the the first Denton Gun Show, the guy at the table unloaded the gun, put them in a plastic bag with the guys' name on it and said, pick them up on the way out...

At Big Town, a couple of years ago, pre-30.06 signage, I was told verbally "no loaded guns, no concealed . . ." etc.

In front of the cop doing the zip tieing, I dumped the mag and round out of my 1911 and proceeded to stow them in my pocket while he zip tied the gun.

Then, while handing me back my now "securely fastened" 1911, he told me that I wasn't allowed to have "that ammo" on me, so I pulled the round and mag back out and handed them to my wife, who stowed them in her purse. That seemed to satisfy the cop, and since he didn't specifically mention the two spare mags on my belt, neither did I.

BTW, when he handed the gun back to me he did so with the slide locked open. I hit the slide stop as I holstered up and only later noticed that that action had apparantly severed the zip tie . . .

I have often wondered what the reaction would have been if someone had noticed that I was carrying an "untied" gun.

I ave also gotten quite a kick out of watching dealers merrily cut the ties off their guns while handing them to people, and tieing them back up after they have been handed back.

We all have to reach our own comfort level about gunshow restrictions. I've never seen a valid sign around here, so I don't worry about it; I carry anyway. My gun is only leaving my holster for one reason, and if that reason pops up, I'm not worried about trespassing charges.

That said, if I did decide to comply with wire-tie requirements to attend a gun show, I would be the one to clear and show empty. My response to anyone, police or otherwise, demanding to handle my gun would... well, let's just say it wouldn't pass the 10yo daughter rule.

I'd want my money back, for both admission and parking. I might not get it, but I'd raise a big stink. I'd try to turn around everyone in line, and everyone in the parking lot.

I found it troubling after learnign a great deal about the CHL and I look back to when I bought a handgun before I got my CHL. I had purchased it from Joe Gunshow Seller (say that 3 times fast) and I noticed that he did not have a zip tie on the pistol. In fact, he didn't have any one any of the guns except the ones on display. This was at the Market Hall Show in Dallas. Now, if he was supposed to and didn't, that's one thing, but as a CHL holder, if they're given the choice, I should be too. Still makes no sense. Guess I'll do some Q&A time at Market Hall this weekend and get some facts.

TPC 30.06(e) says:

(e) It is an exception to the application of this section
that the property on which the license holder carries a handgun is
owned or leased by a governmental entity and is not a premises or
other place on which the license holder is prohibited from carrying
the handgun under Section 46.03 or 46.035.

The GRB is owned by the City of Houston, which is a governmental entity, and it is not otherwise prohibited in 46.03 or 46.035. Thus, it would stand to reason that any 30.06 sigange at the GRB for any event does not apply.

Anyone have an opinion on this?

At one in San Antonio several yr ago that had only the sign at the table. I asked about concealed & they said it also had to be unloaded & tied. Ask how they wanted it & he Laughed & said "preferably unloaded". I cleared my own & they gave no claim ticket or anything. When returned asked for Mag & bullet. "When may I reload?" When you return to your vehicle. Thank you sir. All very cordial. Do wish they would get that part agreed on at the shows.
