Heh. Yes I would have liked to have heard that. Too bad about the bill, tho.jimlongley wrote:I wish, I even considered suing the doctor to recover the part that wasn't covered, but that seemed to be more expensive than just bearing the expense myself. In the end I just called the doctor and told her she was fired, you should have heard the bluster I got back on that.ELB wrote:and your insurance paid for most of it I hope.

Re: Anyone ever made an unplanned hospital trip w/ CHL?
My sister (CHL'er) had a tire blow out on the highway between D/FW and Houston and flipped her Explorer several times. She was not wearing her seatbelt and ended up in the back end of the truck with a broken back (can you tell I'm not a doctor?) and ribs. She was awake and alert and notified the responding LEO where the gun was and he cleared it and gave it to the paramedics to ride with her and her stuff to the hospital. After her boss, (another CHL'er of the female persuasion), showed up to check on her, the hospital staff asked her to take the gun home with her as my sister would be staying a while.
As far as I can tell no one got worked up about it and handled everything calmly as they should.

Couple of years ago I was rearended so hard I went through the back window on my pick-up truck. When I came to, I was in ER strapped to a backboard. A Cop was standing next to me with my pistol asking if there was any family member there he could turn it over to. My wife came in and He handed to Her and asked Her to lock it up in her car.

As promised, I asked last night in Citizens Fire Academy, and they said they have only had a couple of times where a patient was armed. As a matter of routine even LEOs are disarmed when riding as a patient.
The process is that, if a person is conscious and reveals they are carrying, then they are asked to disarm and pass the gun off to a family member or the police. If the person is unconscious then the gun gets passed to the police.
They were not aware of any problems experienced by gun owners retrieving their property.
Of course this only applies to the City of Allen.

Thank you all for sharing your (and others') experiences. No matter what my physical condition, I'm always concerned about my weapon - and who is handling it if I'm "out of it."

Jim - you mentioned a misdiagnosis, etc...I had a bike wreck years ago that resulted in a separated shoulder (and dislocation). The ER folks only caught the separated shoulder aspect of it. The next day I took a family road trip, my family looked at me and said "you're in too much pain, something else is up with your shoulder." Sure enough, went to another facility, "hey, your shoulder is dislocated, let's get that back in" - YES, MUCH BETTER NOW! Needless to say, when I got the bill from the original ER/doctor I called them and got ahold of the doctor - filled him in on the details and he said "don't worry about your bill, it's on the house." Some folks are reasonable (and probably wary of sue-happy patients, I'm not one of those, I just wanted everything to be made right, and it was).

A little late but, from experience, usually hospital security will be contacted and they will secure the weapon until the person is discharged from the hospital. once you ged D/C'd you get your weapon back.
