Re: DPS Processing Times
Some thoughts I was having last night about this quest to receive a Texas CHL.
Historical Events that have happened since I applied for my Texas Concealed Handgun License
1. Hurricane Ike hit Galveston and Houston, and much of the area has since recovered
2. Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day, and MLK day have come and gone.
3. Baseball season ended, the World Series played.
4. College Football season completed and Bowl Championship game held.
5. Pro Football regular season ended, NFC and AFC championship games complete.
6. Paid my annual property taxes.
7. Celebrated a birthday, my wife’s, birthday and our anniversary.
8. The stock market and worldwide financial markets have crashed
9. Gasoline has gone from $4.00 a gallon to $1.50 a gallon
10. The Iraq surge has been successful, and troops have begun drawing down.
11. The Texas Legislature began its 2009 session
12. A new president has been elected and has taken office
Despite all this “progress,” I still see this message on the DPS CHL website

Re: DPS Processing Times
When you got your hurricane Ike letter from the DPS, what part of "unknown period of time" did you not understand? Some how, when I read that "the Department remains hopeful that these delays will be minimal," it didn't give me a whole lot of hope I'd be hearing back from them any time soon.TimmyD wrote:Some thoughts I was having last night about this quest to receive a Texas CHL.

You can contact representative Ed Driver's office and your own representatives, but what we need now is a lawsuit. Even the law itself recognizes that 180 amounts to a denial, and we have quite a few people on this site alone that are beyond that.

Someone in hre had an interesting idea: I believe the law states that after a certain number of days, you're de-facto denied. MAybe you should appeal your "denial"?

Re: DPS Processing Times
I mailed my completed packet (with fingerprints, CHL course certificate etc) on Sat Jan 31st, 2009. I called today and they told me it's not been entered into the system so they can't confirm if they received it at all. I foolishly didn't mail my packet certified mail so I'm not sure what to do. Is it normal for it to take over a month for them to receive the completed application if mailed to them using standard mail?
Re: DPS Processing Times
It takes about a month for DPS to open your packet and start processing it once they receive it... I sent mine out on 1/28/2009 and it did not show in progress until 2/26/2009... I sent mine Certified Mail but it didn't buy me anything... The Post Office did not scan the bar code in Austin so I never received a delivery confirmation, but I called DPS and they have it in hand and are processing it. So your status should change any day now, keep checking...nflguy wrote:I mailed my completed packet (with fingerprints, CHL course certificate etc) on Sat Jan 31st, 2009. Re: DPS Processing Times
They received it today. Whew!
Now it's time to find a semi-automatic handgun that is suitable for concealed carry. I want something that is lightweight but packs a big punch (40 caliber?). Anyone have suggestions?
This might sound silly to some but I do have a fear that the gun will accidentally discharge. Are triggers really that sensitive? Do some guns have more rigid triggers then others??

Re: DPS Processing Times
As long as your finger (or something else) doesn't press the trigger, the gun won't go off. The saying around here is "Keep your booger hook off the bang switch until you're ready for the gun to go 'Bang'."nflguy wrote:This might sound silly to some but I do have a fear that the gun will accidentally discharge. Your holster should cover the entire trigger/trigger guard area.
If you choose pocket carry (not recommended IMHO), there should be NOTHING ELSE in that pocket besides the gun.
Re: DPS Processing Times
And to answer your question, yes, guns have a wide range of trigger sensitivity or pull weight. Consider going to a range that rents various guns and finding which ones you're more comfortable with. My Beretta PX4 has a nice healthy double action trigger pull, and a fairly light single action, as well as a pin block safety so the pin cannot engage without the hammer all the way back. Safety is key.

Re: DPS Processing Times
Mine took 6mons. Iguess doto the hurricane. I took class in Texas City and Mail to DPS on the 20th of June. Received it on Jan.20th. They did E-Mail me there were delays due to the Hurricane. Formaly from Galveston and now in League City. My 3rd. Hurricane in 30yrs. was enough for me.
