Re: Friends of Bill W?
True Story: I almost stumbled in (with a beer or two in hand) on a "Bill W" meeting on a cruise ship once...I had never heard of "Friends of Bill W" before so I thought I'd check it out one day. Every cruise I'd ever been on always had it listed in the daily newsletter/schedule...so after seeing it a few times my curiosity got the best of me one day...but at the last minute I decided to go hang out by the pool. After the trip I googled it, probably best that I didn't go visit Bill W or his friends. I should mention that there was also a Friends of Dorothy listing in the schedule...
As an aside - instead of publicly asking an acquaintance about CHL status, maybe we should just ask them if they are a Friends of Charles? Just a thought.

Re: Friends of Bill W?
We just got off a cruise a couple of weeks ago and as we were standing in line to go through customs someone asked how big our group was. Well, it was a family event and we had 15 people with us. That other person then asked if we were the "Friends of Bill W" group. Her husband had to tell her what that was - we were not from that group.PUCKER wrote:True Story: I almost stumbled in (with a beer or two in hand) on a "Bill W" meeting on a cruise ship once...I had never heard of "Friends of Bill W" before so I thought I'd check it out one day. I like the idea of being friends of Charles. But we will have to spell it CHarLes at first.

I like it....friends of CHarles....lol
Re: Friends of Bill W?
I am hoping that the political fights we have ahead of us dont cause the 'Friends of CHarLes' to also become 'Friends of Bill W'.

Should we be making light of "Friends of Bill W" ? There may be those among us who should be friends of Bill who have not yet admitted it?

I'd like this on a t-shirt size S.PUCKER wrote:

No offense meant to the organization in my attempt at levity in this uncertain time for gun owners. I respect those individuals that recognize they have a problem, can step up and admit it and then seek help. These groups are the way to assist them in overcoming that demon. My church sponsors various support groups and I admire their work. If there are those on the forum who have an addiction issue, I hope they too can get help. Unfortunately being chemically dependent makes you ineligible for a CHL.Oldgringo wrote:Should we be making light of "Friends of Bill W" ? Re: Friends of Bill W?
I suppose I am indirectly a "Friend of Bill W." I am involved in the leadership of my church's Celebrate Recovery program - which is a Christian based 12 step program for people seeking recovery from a variety of issues - including that which plagued Bill W.

Re: Friends of Bill W?
In my personal opinion, I dont think any friend of Bill W. who recognizes what happens to them after taking a drink, has been sober for many years (or a short time for that matter), goes to their meetings, and is free from all mind altering chemicals would be considered "chemically dependant."Unfortunately being chemically dependent makes you ineligible for a CHL.
Someone who is actively drinking everyday, wont admit they might need to actually go to Bill W meetings, is more of a candidate for being "chemically dependant." I think there are probably more people who belong to this forum that fit the latter group than the prior group.
I applaude anyone who recognizes ANY problem in their life and takes the necessary actions to fix it.
