Re: What's the Origin of Your User Name?
"RiverRat"....I grew up and still live on Lake Austin. I had a boat named the RiverRat .......that was how full time lake residents referred to one another.
40-50 years ago most people of modest resources could afford to keep a weekend cabin on one of the central Texas lakes and very few folks lived in permanent residences on the lake. Massive taxes, better roads, bridges, and extreme population influxes with the advent of high tech industry in the area have pretty much limited peoples ability to afford secondary residences on the lakes. Now, most lake homes are primary residences.
No one uses the term much anymore except when the tourists are out on holiday weekends. During those periods a "RiverRat" keeps his boat wound to the top of the boat lift and wouldn't get near the water.

I got it from one of my all-time favorite punk bands (no longer around, unfortunately).
I was in the registration process for a car forum dedicated to Mitsubishi 3000gts and Dodge Stealths about 7 years ago. When it came to the "User Name" part of the form, I sat back and thought about it. I didn't want a screen name that was just my first name, nor did I want it to be related to the car. I knew from my track record that I likely wouldn't have the Stealth for too long.
I was listening to a CD called "Time Is The Distance" from The Deviates at the moment. I've been using that screen name ever since, or a variation on it (Deviate_3s, DeviateM3, DeviateZ06, etc) if "Deviate" is taken when I register.

That's funny, for many years, I've called all of my friends "Biggun". I think that some of them say it now too.bigolbigun wrote:There are some very interesting names on this board. All of them with a story behind them I'm sure. I thought it would be interesting to see where all of these user names came from. I have recieved several inquiries about my user name. It is pronounced with a southern drawl as one word Big Ol Big Un. As in a big dude. I was called that by a rancher one time, and it cracked my friends up and it just kind of stuck with me. I look forward to reading the orgin or meaning behind all of your user names.

Tex Calhoun is a pseudonym I used back when I was writing feature stories for magazines... especially when the author of the article needed to write authoritatively about horses, chili or barbecue. I think the name evokes the image of an Irish cowboy.
"Tex" from Texas and "Calhoun" from one of the streets in the core of downtown Fort Worth.
A few months ago, I discovered that my father's family is Irish instead of Scottish (as we had been told for a number of generations), so I started using the name online to celebrate my previously unknown Irish heritage.

Well it's no secret that I am a GLOCK fan. I also grew up in a family of magicians. My mother and father traveled the magic circuit for many years when I was young so magic has always been a part of my life. So, when trying to think of a good username, MagicGlock seemed to fit. It also describes how I feel about my Glocks: The magic of a Glock is that it always works! Or I often joke that the magic part of my Glock is that it makes the BGs disappear. (One way or the other)
I often use my radio call sign in forums but that just didn't seem to fit here. Since joining, I have found a number of other radio calls on the forum. So to those of you with radio calls I say 73.

It's from Obama's infamous speech about productive members of society clinging to guns and religion.

Yes, much has changed over the years. Back in the late 60's through the mid 70's things were still pretty good. A number of full time residents on the lake but not really that much between "Boat Town" and "City Park". From CP on up to Mansfield was mostly ranch land on one side and few houses on the other side. I'll bet if you could find a place to put a home there now...land would sell by the square foot. I wonder if the Steiner ranch is still there.
I spent many a day on the Slalom Course on Lake Austin growing up. By the mid 80's Austin had changed so much and gotten so big....we decided to move. Great place still (for a big city), but not like it was 40 yrs. ago (pretty much heaven back then).

When I was a younger man my old man would often say "Mama why is the man rideing that chicken? " making fun of my skinny legs and big feet. That is where my name ChickenFoot comes from.

Mine is part of the serial number of my favorite gun. I have better usernames elsewhere, but I figured, this is a gun forum, why not make my name gun related?

When I was a little kid I loved Count von Count. I think he's why I became a Big Four accountant.
