However I think Winchester White Box is the cheapest, most reliable practice ammo, from Wal Mart of all places.

I might try some Blazer if they have it in 124gr for practice.

Man, what a question.

What gun are you using? If you are looking for self-defense ammo, the barrel length changes how the ammo performs, so you should consider that when purchasing.

I also consider cost in my self-defense ammo. This is because I want to be able to cycle through my ammo frequently to have confidence in its reliability. Just my preference.

Unfortunately, all you are going to find on ammo is testing which sounds much more authoritative than it really is, and preference.

Wolf steel case is often very competitive with WWB if you shop around online (Ammoman, Natchez Shooters Supply, Wideners Reloading, Outdoor Marksman, Cheaper than Dirt, etc.).

It's not as good a value if you reload, since you can't do that with the steel cases, but if you leave your empties at the range it might be a choice worth considering.

I wouldn't have thought that Wolf steel cased ammo was competitive with WWB, or even close, in terms of quality.

In either case I'm not going to shoot steel cased ammo in my guns :)

I'm not opposed to steel cased stuff if it works well. I don't reload and I am not interested in reloading so as long as it does its job without damaging my gun I don't see what the fuss is about. The price doesn't hurt either...

Quality is more important to me than price.

If a person shoots so much that they are need of cheap ammo and want quality, I think reloading is the wat to go. It doesn't take too long if you really shoot a lot to pay for the equipment.

Maybe not necessarily when it comes to practice ammo, which you are going to go through in large numbers. For SD ammo, I definitely agree, quality, among other things, is more important than price.

For me, practice ammo needs to be reliable, low wear on my gun, clean, cheap, and it needs to have similar if not identical POI and recoil characteristics to my carry ammo. It is hard to hit all of these things at once. Right now, I am settling for cheap, clean, reliable, low wear, and similar recoil/aim characteristics to my carry ammo because it would double the price for me to get identical recoil/aim to my carry ammo, therefore giving me half as much practice per dollar.

I'm not sure reloading is so economical for 9mm, especially if you are like me and are shorter on time than you are on cash most of the time. If I had to reload in order to shoot, I would never be able to find the time to do either.

For practice, I use Blazer Brass for $8.50/50 in 9mm and $14/50 at WalMart.

I can't bring myself to use the steel case stuff even though it is supposed to work fine in the looser chamber of the Glocks.

For self defense ammo I use Federal Tactical HST in my 9mm and 45 and I use Double Tap Ammo with Gold Dots in my 10mm and 380.
