More people die of drowning every year in the U.S. than are murdered by strangers.

Ain't gonna happen at my age. The Marine Corps sent me to swim-qual every year for 17 years and failed to teach my land-lubber self. But I do appreciate the sentiment.

Good point! Consider the likely speed of the cavalry responding to my 911 call versus their response to a peace officer broadcasting "officer needs assistance." That gedankenexperiment made me consider the possibility that I might need more firepower than a peace officer. However, there's a difference between prudence and paranoia.

It's all a question of what you think your risks are.

When I have 5,000 rounds through a pistol with not one single failure, I feel pretty confident that it will go bang when I need it. I worry more about vehicle accidents than personal violence anyway.

I wear my seatbelt even though my car has airbags, but I don't feel the need to install a roll cage in my car. However, I don't think a peace officer should be permitted to hassle a driver who does.
