Ristmo, That sounds kind of risky to me. Have you ever had any problems with the gift cards not working when you tried them? It sounds like a good deal, but I would be hesitant to buy a gift card from Craigslist. What kind of recourse do you have if they send you a worthless card? :confused5

Dat's scary..
While most everyone has had a run on ammo and guns, Cheaper Than Dirt was the quickest to raise most of their prices, and from what I've seen, by a higher percentage than most. Ironic, given their name.. :-)

Their shipping costs are also suspect, IMO and experience. :totap:

Well my local Academy had lots of WWB 9mm value packs onhand on Gray Saturday ... I bought two boxes at $17.99. That's a decent price but not great enough to warrant stockpiling IMHO. It gets down to $15 for value pack WWB FMJ 9mm or $10/box for WWB 9mm JHP and I'll buy a whole bunch.

That just makes me crazy. The one in Plano was sold out on Saturday. They told me it was all gone by 10 AM on Black Friday.

Depends. You always need to confirm the balance when you buy the card. There's a phone number on the card to call and check the balance, as well as a card id number. Now, you may want to use the card asap, in case the other person had the number written down and went back home to use it online. If you're able to meet the seller at work (where they work), IMO, your odds are only better, as they'd be hesitant to risk you coming back and making a commotion claiming that they were dishonest. I forget if Academy has a scratch off code or not (I think they don't), but some gift cards allow you to scratch off the code, and if it hasn't been scratched then you know the number isn't written down somewhere. Still, though, from a risk standpoint, if 3 out of 4 work, you don't lose anything. It might not be right for everyone, but for me, it's within my risk threshold. You can also buy Walmart gift cards (more often, on Ebay), but they don't tend to be discounted nearly as much. Good luck!

At $15 a pack, I'd buy all I could. The way I see it, you can never have too much ammo. While I wouldn't quite call it stockpiling, I'd definitely justify several boxes as dollar cost averaging ;-). Then again, I try to do that several times a month!

I think the best method for buying GC is only FTF transactions at the B&M of whatever GC you're buying, whether it is Wal-Mart, Academy, Dicks etc. That way you can verify the balance while you're there, that's how I usually do it. The most I saved was about $50 dollars buying a Home Depot one for $250. Some times you run into a really good deals on Craigslist.

You might want to try this at Wal-Mart-

I went to the Humble store 2 different times during a 2 week period 3 weeks ago, no 45 ACP. I went back one more time and still no ammo. I asked the guy behind the counter when I could expect them to receive more and he said that he just did not have any idea.

I asked to speak to the area manager for Sporting Goods. After about 5 minutes a young guy shows up and said "How can I help you?" I explained that I had been in the store now the 3rd time looking for 45 ACP and I wanted to know when they would receive a new shipment. He said "I can check the computer but B4 I do I will look in the back receiving area."

In 5 minutes he returned with 5 500rd cases of WW White Box. I bought 2 cases @ 29.94 per hundred. I asked him when they received the ammo and he turned a case up and looked at the bar code on the end of the box. They were received 7/31/08. No one had put the ammo out since July!

Ask for the area manager, maybe it will work for you.

I ran into something similar. Wal-Mart in Plano was out of 45 and 40. I asked the guy when they would get more. He said it didn't look like they had any coming in for awhile. One week later(last night) they had several cases of both. The guy went to the back and got it for me. I made a comment to him about how they must have gotten a shipment in. He told me it's been there for several weeks at the least. Makes me wonder if the guy last week just didn't feel like going to the stock room.

Same thing happened to me in Marshall. I picked up 500 rounds that had been on the bottom of a pallet for 6 months. I only wish they'd have given it to me for the price on the case, instead of the current price.

I did not read all 18 pages of replies, so sorry if this a repeat, but the link below has always done good for me to find cheap ammo.

LTDammo.com has some good pricing on what they do have.
