I just returned from Texas CHL Instructor recertification in Austin.
Marion Stahl told us that they're presently running about 4 weeks behind in processing permits. They apparently have some trouble keeping staffed with the data-entry people they need to do the gruntwork of the department, so a bit of patience is in order.

One bit of information that I have not see posted, but think would be valuable, is to know HOW the application was submitted, using the online application form, or submitting everything from scratch (using paperwork from CHL). I myself opted to use the online application path, so will definately include that in my response.

If it were me, I would submit the "fast" prints. There is a horror story in the forum from a poster who said his wife had prints rejected 3 or 4 times.

I believe the ONLY time they will email your PIN is if you send them an email requesting it (assuming they've begun processing your application). If you applied online, the PIN was included in the packet DPS mailed to you. If you picked up a packet at the CHL class and mailed it in after the class, your PIN will arrive by snail mail.

For what it's worth, packet receipt at DPS to receiving snail mail PIN was about a month last fall. That time appears to have approximately doubled since the first of the year.

I spoke with the DPS today and was told I would recieve it soon after they start processing my app. The DPS rep and I both had a good laugh when I mentioned to her that I understand that they are very backed up with app's and they are alway's very kind and understanding at the DPS office which I truelly appreciate.

Thanks for your reply,

I sent my packet on April 24th. It was received April 28th. I still have not heard a word. I have emailed several times about a PIN but I get the same canned response each time. "You have not been entered yet. After we enter you, your PIN will arrive by mail". My girlfriend submitted at the same time and got her PIN three weeks ago. One thing I DO know....there does not seem to be a lack of employees in Austin to carry all of those new application checks to the bank. My check cleared 4 days after they got the packet. Perhaps they should use a few of the "check runners" to complete applications. "rlol"

I received an update today ... there were 4,000 backlogged applications at the beginning of June. There are currently (June 30, 2008) 2,500-3,000 backlogged applications. It appears that TX DPS is catching up on the back-log from earlier in the year.

Maybe all the new temp workers are really helping the situation.
