Good reason to have a safe

I just got a safe about 3 months ago.On monday my house was broken into so they didn't get the good stuff. Just a dvd player and a digital camera. So if any of y'all have been putting off buying a gun safe you really should get one. J.D.

Sorry to hear about the break-in. Was wondering if they made any attempt to break into the safe or move the whole thing. Is your safe bolted down?

I don't think they even tried to get in it. I don't have it bolted down. It is heavy. I think it is about 500lbs. So I guess if they can carry it out they can have it.

Mine is about 650 empty. All loaded up (guns & lots of ammo) it is probably around 900. I don't have it bolted but it is in a very small room accessed by a very small hallway. They would have to be prepared with a heavy duty dolly, lots of time and a lift gate truck. By then my neighbors (also armed) would already be shooting.

Not to worry you, but, be sure not to waste any time tightening up security at the house. Now that they know the layout, they might make a return visit to get what they miseed out on.

Yes, the phone line was cut at the back of the house.I guess I'll have to get the cell phone backup.Or a really bad dog.

Dang, I guess they really wanted in there! I thought there was an option of having the alarm company notified if the line was cut when they installed my alarm (at extra cost I think). Does anyone know anything about that or its availability?

Yeah it seems to me if that happened to me I would beef up security now because if there cutting the phone line what intentions did they have if you were in the house. Hope if works out ok for ya

#1 I have read where in a lot of places the police do not respond to home alarms,unless somebody calls in an actual burglary in progress they're are too many false alarms and a shortage of manpower.I got a gun safe after i had 2 guns stolen an AR15 and a 1911 45 acp,I knew who did it but for lack of proof cops couldn't charge him,He left about 10,000 worth of guns in the closet.I would get motion sensors and an outdoor camera if you can afford it to take video

My wife's coworker's house was broken into 6 months ago and the cops told them the same thing. Sure enough, the first hit was just a scout as they got hit again last week. Ripped the gunsafe from the wall and floor where it was mounted into wood.

That's what I thought until my wife told me the above. About four 1/2" bolts Hilti-ed to the concrete floor would sure prevent someone from wheeling it out on a dolly. It'll take you longer to unload and load the safe than it will to drill the holes and bolt her down. Cheap insurance if you ask me.

Oh yeah, the thiefs must have been short on brain cells...it seems they passed some of the coworker's checks to a local pizza delivery guy. The deliver guy led the cops to the house when the checks were reported bad and as having been stolen in the gunsafe. I just hope the firearms are recovered.

Congrads are in order for having your good stuff secured while you were out. You beat the bad guys at their game. Glad to hear they didn't get any of your guns.

It's true that sometimes criminals do come back to get what they left behind.

A neighbor of mine lost a gun and significant amount of cash after burglars stole their entire safe.

If criminals are prepared with a dolly and vehicle, they can get your safe out as easy as a delivery guy can get a fridge into your house... so bolting the safe down does make it much more difficult to steal.

Another low cost option is hardening the phone line.
