Suggestions for carrying a Sig P-229R

The first part of this is the background...there really is a question at the bottom...really!

When I was in the military a long time ago (seems like 100 years or so now), I had to carry a weapon in plain close sometimes. We used shoulder rigs and jackets to carry the M9 and at times I would carry a Bernadeli 380 IWB in the small of my back.

But I haven't really carried much since then.

I just got my CHL a couple of weeks ago and had planned on carrying a Taurus Millenium Pro (PT-111) in 9 mm. Unfortunately, my Taurus ejected the recoil spring out of the front of the slide and has been returned to Taurus for repairs. Unless the repair comes back with some significant modification, I'm the type of guy that assumes that this type of failure is a bad design and will probably happen again, and with my luck and bad karma that I'm still burning off, it will happen in the 1 time in 763,492 chances that I will actually need it. So I'm a little hesitant to depend on it.

So at the point it failed, I still don't have plastic yet so I'm not carrying yet. And I'm thinking "Man Sigs are really reliable, I love they way the shoot, and homeland security uses them, maybe I should get one of those."

So I do. I take it to the range a few times, I have several hundred rounds through it, I can group really well with, I have a IWB holster that also houses an extra mag and I also have a Blackhawk CQC Serpa Holster that I put the paddle rig on, I've got a mag loaded with 9 Gold Dot 115 gr, 2 Glaser Silver, and topped off with 2 Glaser Blues. I've thought this through and I'm ready to go. Right?!

I get my plastic and....

Yeah, about that...That gun is really heavy, and do I really try these holster rigs out for more than about 5 minutes. Heck no! Why would I want to do that?

So...right now I'm carrying a KelTec P-3TA with a clip on it as an IWB.

Anybody have a good way to carry a Sig P229R?

Oh, and I forgot to mention, that now (as opposed to when I was in the Nav...) I'm about 5' 10" and pretty pudgy (OK - Fat) at around 290 lbs.

I use a holster so I can carry a reliable and effective pistol. Sometimes I pocket carry a mouse gun but if I'm wearing a shirt I can probably carry something bigger in a good IWB.

I too had a Sig P229R that I was going to carry, but after I bought a holster and wore it around the house a bit, I realized it was heavier than I wanted to carry around all the time. I didn't like the DA/SA action as the first trigger pull is different from the rest, either. I am in the process of selling the 229 and I bought a Glock 19 instead. The Glocks grip is actually about 1/2 inch shorter than the Sigs and magazines are $15 compared to the $30 for the Sig. While the Sig is a great gun, and it was dead on and extremely reliable for the time I had it, it just wasn't going to work out for me as a CCW gun.
Of course you need to make sure you have a quality holster and gun belt for ANY CCW piece.

edit: To actually give you an answer to your question, I had a Comp-Tac CTAC holster for my Sig which was really nice. I bought a Comp-Tac MTAC for my Glock. The difference between the two is the MTAC has a leather backing as opposed to being completely made of kydex like the CTAC. Either would be a great holster for any gun. You also need to make sure you have a quality gun belt, mine came from Gunner's ally and is solid.

I carry a 229 (no 'R') most of the time. It sits in a Milt Sparks VMII holster, which is the most comfortable IWB holster I've tried.
Comp-Tac makes some good models as well for the 229.

I use an MTAC holster with either of my XDs or my 1911. I think that my belt is what makes carrying the 1911 easy. I bought a Wilderness Instructor belt and had some extra reinforcement added to it. The pistol, and pants, stay put.

I have a Galco IWB for my P226R. I wear it about the 330 position, just make sure to wear an undershirt, as the handle can sometimes chaffe(sp) when having to walk around, stand up, sit down all day.

Have P-229 .40 and Milt Sparks Summer Special II. Works great. I also have a Horseshoe Leather OWB that is really comfortable, but here in TX the Milt Sparks is easier to hide under a t-shirt.

I have since gone to Sig 239 (single stack) and also have Milt Sparks SSII for it and it is even better.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd go ahead and throw my two cents in anyway. :-)

I carry a 229R all day every day (well, except for the the days I carry my un-railed 229 instead. ) and I've settled on a 1-1/2" Beltman bullhide belt http://www.thebeltman.net/bullhide.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and a Comp-Tac Infidel IWB holster with belt clip and the Gurkha strut. http://www.comp-tac.com/catalog/product ... ucts_id=68" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I love the combination, and it works really, really well for me. This past Friday, for instance, I wore it for more than 20 hours straight, and it was as comfortable the last hour as the first. I don't even know that it's there anymore.

+1 for the VMII and good belt. I carry my 229 daily. I am on my feet in a restaruant for 11-12 hour shifts, and it is comfortable all day.

I don't want to hijack this post. I do have one question and then I can move on....I have a Sig 220 Compact - does Milt Sparks have a VMII holster that the 220 compact can fit? I had heard that the VMII P229 R would work....but, I wanted opinions that I trust from here...

I would suggest a Milt Sparks VMII or even the Watch 6 is fairly descent. I ordered an IWB for my P228 from UBG Holsters & just got it last week, it rides a little higher than I like but it very good quality and conceals the SIG very well. The C-Tac & M-Tac from Comp-Tac are also great holsters. Also, enough can't be said for a good quality stiff leather gun belt, those P229's are a bit on the heavy side & you need the extra support. DM Bullard in Azle will make one custom for you brown or black for around $60 and they're pretty nice.
