Does anyone else carry a 10mm?

I am a proud owner of a Sig P220 .45, but recently I found a new caliber that I personally believe is superior to all others in the semi-auto group. The 10mm is, IMHO, the most versitile caliber you can carry, because you can shoot anywhere from 135gr. bullets at 1600fps / 767 ft.lbs. to 235gr. rounds at 1120fps/ 641 ft./lbs. (http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalo ... e3de6db095. The FBI initially carried this caliber as their service weapon, but some agents found the recoil to be a little too sharp for them. I personally own a Glock 29 subcompact (my concealed weapon), and have fired many hot loads through it. The thing I noticed is that the accuracy and damage is extraordinary, while the recoil is very similar (IMHO) to a .45 subcompact! I am glad someone showed me the light on the 10mm because not only is it a fantastic self-defense caliber, it also is a very nice hunting sidearm. Same here, I've been carrying a modified Glock 29 since I received my CHL. I use Double Tap 180gr. Speer Gold Dot ammo, and I can put a tight group with it. I definately like it .

I loved the idea of the 10mm when they first rolled them out. One of my favorite firearms is a Ruger 41mag. It is my handgun of choice when hunting in the lower 48. The 10mm seemed like the perfect partner piece for the 41mag to carry in a auto for protection. Like you mentioned it is very flexable when looking for different loads.

The problem occured when the recoil limited the number of people wanting to shoot the round. Ammo can be hard to come by.

If I ever manage the time to reload again I will more than likely pick on up, for now I will have to be content with my 45's.

I sent 29 slide to Bar-Sto for .40 barrel to be able to shoot somewhat cheaper ammo. FWIW, some chron results:

165 grain Gold Dot: 1,302 fps

180 grain Golden Sabre: 1,247 fps

200 grain XTP: 1,137 fps

220 grain cast: 1,028 fps

5-4-05 .40 180g hand loads; Sig 229: 934 fps Glock 29 w/Bar-Sto .40: 956 fps

True. IIRC, around 1400 in inventory. And guess who pays for the ammo?

I had the opportunity to shoot one several years ago and they are sweet - very accurate and surprisingly low recoil for what it puts downrange.

I usually carry a revolver, but I sometimes carry my S&W 1006. I love those DoubleTap 180gr. Gold Dots, too. I bought a box of the new 155gr. Barnes XPB's, but I haven't shot any yet.

I thought the FBI decided years ago to NOT use the 10mm because women agents couldn't handle the recoil, which prompted them to develop the .40 S&W (a shorter cartridge version of the 10mm).

Doug - IIRC, the 10mm pistols were not even widely distributed within the ranks of the fibbies. Some of the initial testers (I think - from old reading elsewhere) made the determination the recoil might be a little much (for more than just some ladies). The "MP-5" is a 9mm sub-gun. I think their 10mm version has a slightly different designation.

IMHO 10mm is a truly amazing caliber. It is red-hot when you want it to be, and a little slower and heavier when you want it to be based on what you will be using it for. My co-worker (a fellow CHL) just bought a glock 27 (.40 subcompact) over the weekend, and while they both shoot the .40 diameter bullets, it is evident when you hold the Glock 29 (10mm subcompact) next to the Glock 27 that the 29 is built for higher pressures. Then when you set the 10mm and the .40 loads next to each other, you can see how they length of the case houses enough powder to really throw the bullet downrange. Now, I like the .40 and I like the .45 because each of these calibers has pros and cons. I just personally feel that the 10mm covers all the bases as far as bullet weight, FPS, and energy from the 135 gr. to the 230 gr.

Yep, that extra required "bulk" methinks is another the reason the fibbies liked the thought of the .40 "short and weak", as it would work with the same size frames as existing 9mms. Notice Glock makes 3 standard sizes in 9 and 40, even 357 Sig - but did not even bother to make "the baby" size in 10mm.

I immediately went to the pinky extensions on the 29 magazines. For me, just not enough there to get a comfortable grip for controlled rapid fire without 'em.

I also bought the Pierce Grips. The same day I ordered my G29, I also ordered a 'Defender' concealment holster from activeprogear.com, then ordered the Pierce grips so that I could get more control for rapid fire purposes. Well built, and no jams!

so, if 10mm is the same bullet as a 40S&W, can you buy a Springfield XD40, get the right magazine, barrel, and whatnot, and shoot them both, or is it like the ol' 38spl/357mag thing?

I've also heard of being able to use a 40S&W gun with the right mag, and barrel, to shoot 357Sig rounds.
um, so how's that work? is the 357Sig case the same size as the 40? or... er.... huh?

All 3 are the same diameter.
.40 S&W & .357 sig are the same length. Shorter than 10mm
.357 sig is necked down to accept the smaller bullet.
You can use the same mag for .357 sig & .40 S&W in guns that have both barrels.

so, an XD40 can shoot a 357Sig round, but with a different barrel.
can you then get a 10mm Barrel & Mag and shoot 10mm with it?
would this be the equivelent of shooting +P rounds of 40SW?
