15% Ammo increase

I heard that winchester is going to raise the price by 15% this week. What say you?

Ammo just went up about a week ago. I used to pay $9.xx a box at Wal-mart and now it is $14.xx for the same box of .45acp.

Yes, but that price was for Blazer Brass. I noticed that while the Blazer Brass went up, the WWB 100-round value packs stayed the same price. I was wondering how long that would last. I can see Winchester's prices going up soon. We'll just have to wait and see.

After several years of enjoying the relative low price of factory ammo I have dusted off my reloading gear and have started rolling my own again. I shot SSP Saturday in our IDPA match the ammo I was shooting cost me $5.30 box/50 (.357 brass loaded to a PF of 125000+)- - - factory ammo that will make power factor is going for $12-15 a box.

My savings on .45 and .40 are comparable if not better, 9mm isn't as good but still enough to make the effort worthwhile.

There's not much to say other than welcome to the new economy. Reloading has been the way most high volume shooters kept their costs at a reasonable level. The increase in the cost of retail ammunition means that more shooters will turn to reloading or choose to shoot less often. Some will simply accept the increased cost and move on.

I don't know about the 15%.
Feb 2008 American Rifleman, page 25: "Lead Cost Razing The Roof". It says that lead cost has gone from $450 a ton 5 years ago to $3,200 a ton presently.

Copper and brass prices have risen also. I don't know about powder. Lots of ammo has doubled in price, or more, in the last year or so. And lots of surplus stuff is not even being seen anymore.

The good news is the government is going to send us all a check this summer, to stimulate the economy. BUY AMMO!

The problem with reloading is..If you do not already own the necessary equipment the intital cost outweighs the benefit unless you load thousands of rounds

The problem with reloading is..If you do not already own the necessary equipment the intital cost outweighs the benefit unless you load thousands of rounds

You are correct but how much do you shoot? If you shoot like most cops, you might not recover your investment before retirement (Sorry Dad). But if you consume a conservative volume of 2500-3000 rounds annually, the cost of reloading equipment and components is often recovered within the first 12 months of shooting. YMMV but, I recovered my reloading investment in less than six months because I was averaging 200-250 rounds/week in 45ACP back in 1997.

You are correct but how much do you shoot? If you shoot like most cops, you might not recover your investment before retirement (Sorry Dad). If someone wants to try reloading start simple and work up. Buy a basic single stage press, set of dies, scale and powder measure. That's all it takes to get started many manufacturers have basic kits like this for a couple of hundred bucks you don't need to start out with a progressive press with all the bells and whistles to enjoy the savings of reloading.

Well, we kinda saw this coming a year or so ago...

What I found interesting, and others may have noticed this too...It is a bit ironic, that as the price of bang bang has gone up...The price of some handguns and other firearms have kinda come down...

I noticed that at the last Pasadena gunshow this last weekend...

And that the place was PACKED! You can alway equate the political temperament of the gunowning community by how crowded the gunshows are in an election year!

I find it re-assuring, and have never minded bumping elbows with friends and folks I do not know at those things!

I just ordered a Lee Loadmaster press kit for my 9mm. With the metal price continuing to climb, I must start rolling my own pistol ammo just to keep shooting. I already reload for my 30.06. You know I have just as much fun reloading as I do shooting. It is all apart of the culture.
