Re: Concerns Arise Over Law Allowing Drivers To Carry Guns
Am I the only one who is slighty concerned about anyone being able to carry in car?
Here is why. I know CHL's are not criminals. I know most have qualified on the range and can properly handle a weapon.
What scares me are the people who used to be armed at home, never been to the range, and do not know how to safely handle a weapon the weapon 18 inches from them. Am I the only one?

Re: Concerns Arise Over Law Allowing Drivers To Carry Guns
Nope, I am not afraid from this law and I actively support it. I have always been a believer that laws only stop honest people. Anyone who wanted a gun in the car already had one. I just don't see the numbers going up very much. What the law did is stopping making criminals of some people who were otherwise honest.
Many of our laws do this, and it really needs to be stopped. Why are we making criminals of people who never hurt anyone else in any way?

First, it's always been legal to carry while traveling and this new law simply clarifies the definition so that some over zealous DAs don't try to work around the law. Second, I agree with you that the numbers should not increase all that much.srothstein wrote:Anyone who wanted a gun in the car already had one.
Of course all the media attention may actually add to those who decide to carry in their vehicles.

I hope so. As Dr. Lott showed us, more guns results in less crime.tbranch wrote:Of course all the media attention may actually add to those who decide to carry in their vehicles.

Nope, don't agree. I don't see anything there about having to meet your idea of reasonable restrictions. If you can point out where it is written there I will agree."A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed"

My concern, as noted in my post, was not really about criminals. Anyone who wanted a firearm in his/her car was risking the fact that "traveling" was not defined. Please speak up, those who have not been to the range and seen the "idiot." THESE are the people who are now armed in the car, and yes, that scares me.
I recently joined PSC, and I love the facility. But even 15 minutes after I got my badge, I had a guy who chose to begin to fire 50 feet behind me on the pistol range. I could see every inch of the end of his barrel, and I was down range of every shot he took. I brought this to his attention and he scoffed at me. I had 6 weapons on the range and was not about to leave them to go hunt down the range master since the fellow left 4 minutes later while I and another member of this forum got clear of his shots while figuring out what to do. I will ask PSC directors about a central number one might call to possibly notify the range master on property that day about unsafe members.
Simple example. I'm just saying, when the CHL came about in the 90's, I thought it was a great idea because it goes to at least attempt to "qualify" someone to carry in PUBLIC. I left baileys gun range and went to PSC after a Korean pointed his loaded UZI at me simply because he clearly had no training in safety, and that he happened to be the "range idiot" that is so prevelant at baileys.
My point is safety and training, nothing more or less. I focus on safety more than anything when it comes to firearms. I'm not arguing RKBA. There are people, including several in my own family who have carried in car and based on age and training/exp, simply should not have that firearm accessible in a vehicle!

Some CHL instructors see this as cheating them out money that should be theirs! Gun shop ranges have also voiced this. It is just my view...but they could keep their nose out of my business.

Re: Concerns Arise Over Law Allowing Drivers To Carry Guns
Good and honest people should not be the basis to possess a firearm in ones car or on ones person. I know many more people who cannot properly handle a firearm safely, than those who can. Possession of a firearm in ones home SHOULD be the right of every law abiding American (less those with mental or other issues) without question. I feel less concern with homeowners who are armed and unsafe, than I am about the civic next to me (with a flowmaster and spinning rims) while my 1 year old son is 5 feet away from the "you lookin at me" fool who can now carry legally in his car. Please do not mistake me as someone who is anti RKBA, but I keep seeing people with firearms who put my, and more importantly my family's safety at risk...and it concerns me. I believe the right to keep and bear arms, is inherent. But as much as it pains me to say, I worry. As a new parent, I never worry about the gang thug who moved back home with his mamma next door as there is several feet of brick between him and my son. I do worry about the 21 year old thug who bought a Lorcin and is now playing with it in his car, never learned safety, and my kid is looking out the car window at him.srothstein wrote:Nope, I am not afraid from this law and I actively support it. You sound like you're arguing for infringements on a right that RKBA says "shall not be infringed."lawrnk wrote:Please do not mistake me as someone who is anti RKBA,
What exactly are they doing to put you at risk? You can press charges if they violate section 22.05 of the penal code.lawrnk wrote:but I keep seeing people with firearms who put my, and more importantly my family's safety at risk...and it concerns me. For the first part, one could argue that needing a CHL to carry on ones person would be quite a "infringment"boomerang wrote:You sound like you're arguing for infringements on a right that RKBA says "shall not be infringed."lawrnk wrote:Please do not mistake me as someone who is anti RKBA,

Thanks for quoting that 22.05 thing, I imagine it will bring great solice when hector the illegal kills someone. I feel much better. Did you know that illegal alien criminals can now carry on their persons in the car?

Have you read the law? Criminals still can't legally carry.

I'm not sure what relevance that has to the question. It sure sounds like you haven't read the law.lawrnk wrote:boomerang wrote:Have you read the law? Criminals still can't legally carry.

Re: Concerns Arise Over Law Allowing Drivers To Carry Guns
Perhaps I wasn't clear in my response. Those same idiots would ahve carried guns in their cars or on their persons before thsi anyway. The law will not encourage them, nor did it discourage them. These fools who felt like carrying a gun made them tougher always did it. The only people who the law will encourage to carry were the few who believed that obeying the law was more important than self-defense.lawrnk wrote: I feel less concern with homeowners who are armed and unsafe, than I am about the civic next to me (with a flowmaster and spinning rims) while my 1 year old son is 5 feet away from the "you lookin at me" fool who can now carry legally in his car.
The idiots and criminals carried anyway, and a few good people carried anyway because they knew self defense was better than obedience to the law. Since the statute of limitations has long expired, I will tell you I used to carry an S&W Model 19 in the edge of my bunk when I drove a truck cross country. I started after someone offered me $20,000 to park the truck at a specific truck stop in El Paso. Being an owner operator, and a former MP, I felt like I needed to protect my truck from being stolen.
I did not think you were anti RKBA, though you have not yet gotten to the level I have on how deeply you feel about it. I understand how a new child can make you look at the world and the people near you differently. I was probably a little over-protective with my first son also. By the time the seventh child was born, I learned it is better to show them the real world and let them learn from other's mistakes. The only downside is that most of them will never go through the stage of supporting some liberal ideas that may really deserve some support. I do understand how Churchill (I think) could say that a person of 20 should be liberal and a person of 40 should be conservative. Please do not mistake me as someone who is anti RKBA, but I keep seeing people with firearms who put my, and more importantly my family's safety at risk...and it concerns me.
