I think that depends on what type of weapon they draw. Even considering a cocked firearm you still may have a chance if they're preoccupied looking left & right over their shoulders. :headscratch:
Only if you stand there and let him shoot you as you draw. RUNNING to the 1 or 11 while you draw then shooting him will ruin his day, not yours.

I disagree that the BG has not practiced. You have to assume he has.

In this case, I would move to his left at the 1 oclock while drawing then shoot him in the side and back as I ran by, then change direction to the right and continue to shoot, then make one more direction change to close with him and make sure he is down.

If you stand there and duke it out you will probably get shot.

Your scenario is a little too vague to discuss actual tactics but here are some gems I've picked up along the way.

Situational awareness is very key. The fact that you saw and were evaluating them as potential threats is a big plus. As pointed out, you being alert may have caused them to pass you up as prey.

Distance is your friend. Anything that increases the distance (physical and mental) between you and the attacker like step back or blading your body helps. Recognizing any cover in your area and using it greatly increases your chances of survival.

Movement is good and movement off the line of attack is better. Don't just retreat in a straight line, angle away from the weapon.

Action will beat reaction. Lots of people have drawn and shot attackers with cocked guns pointed at them. You have to pick or manufactor your moment then act instantly and without mercy. If at bad breath range, knock his weapon arm off line while drawing and firing. Distract attacker verbally or visually with anything to draw attention away from your weapon (ie Fake a heart attack, blubber, cringe and cry like a baby, wave weak hand around in air up high while accessing gun on belt, toss a mugger roll at his feet (description found on other posts or in any M. Ayoob book)).

Getting shot or cut HURTS but rarely kills you instantly. Don't stop fighting until the badguy stops moving or runs away.

Sometimes you might comply with a badguy's orders to give yourself time but you need to draw a line in the sand. For me, I will NOT surrender my weapon, I will NOT allow myself to be tied up, I will NOT get in a vehicle or go somewhere else, I will NOT go down to my knees and I will NOT allow my wife or children to be threatened with a weapon. At that point, I will attack with what ever I have, even if it is bare hands against a machinegun.

The best investment you can make for self defense is training and practice so you are prepared and know what you are capable of doing.
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.

Thanks. Jeremae and everyone. There were some good advices.

Austin, why do you suggest moving at 1 or 11 o'clock toward your attacker, albeit at a slight angle ? Why not at 5 or 7 o'clcok, which gains some more distance between you and them ? I do not know much about these SD tactics. Can you elaborate ?

I am trying to decide what kind of holster to use, so that I can best hide my action of drawing my weapon, while acting some distracting moves, such as crying like babies  I am actually leaning toward some kind of crossdraw holster at 10/11 clcok.

Opinions ?

Best Opinion is to try a few different one out and choose one that works for you. What work for one person does not necessarily work for another.

As for my self I wear a Beretta 92FS in a MTAC from Comp-Tac at the 3 o'clock position.

I see, if you run past them at 1 or 11 o'clock you are forcing them to turn, something that they are not necessarily prepared to do right then. This is buying you precious time to actually draw your weapon.

If you run to the 5 or 7 o'clock position, it's you who are turning. The BG? Then all he has to do is aim and shoot.

Don't believe what I tell you. Get a buddy and an airsoft or water pistols and test out the scenario.

I assume he is 3-15 feet away.

Distance is not your friend if he has you in his sights. You either want to put something between his pistol and you or actively accelerate out of the line of fire.

Furthermore, it takes 1-2 sec for him to reindex if he can get the pistol line up on you. That is 3-4 steps for you.

If you move to the 1 or 11 then it is very hard for the BG to track you with the pistol when you first start to move and then becomes progressively harder as you go behind him.

If you move at 5 or 7 then its a slight adjustment for him to index you then shoot. And because you are moving away on a straight line through him he can just keep shooting. So if you move to the 5 or 7 , he will have you when you have moved 9 feet or so.

If the FOF drills I did with experienced shooters I got the crap shot out of me if I stood there or moved anywhere behind the 3 - 9 o' clock line. If I moved and shot, I got hit 1 out of 3 stages and it was almost always a glancing blow to my leg or side. (BTW, Getting to cover if it was 3 steps away was the best thing. )

BTW, In this type of scenario where you actively move you WILL have to transition to one handed shooting and will be point shooting. In FOF drills I always got 3-6 shots on my opponent while moving using these techniques. Longer shots will require the sights, but 25 feet or less you will get hits.

If you are in good shape, I would try AIWB at the 1 oclock then move it out from there.

I tried all kinds.

I now do AIWB at 1 oclock with no holster ( aka Mexican Carry ) most of the time. Its very easy to disarm and its the quickest draw for me. I usually carry an XD but sometimes a 1911. If its a glock you should get a holster. My mags go in my back left pocket.

On avoidance...If you see a snake in the grass and go around him, it doesn't matter if it was a garter or a rattler; you're clear. But sometimes, you just need to break out the hoe.

On carrying and presenting a CHL to a LEO...Presenting it is a discreet way of telling him you are carrying and establishing (ideally) you're an above board member of society. If you are carrying a weapon and not the liscense AND he discovers you are armed...well, the scenario will probably be less than polite.

What is that from? I've apparently not seen it. Impressively good technique for something coming out of Hollywood.
