CNN/YouTube Republican Debates - REVISED

#1

Post by Snake Doctor »

I am planning to submit a video question for the CNN/YouTube Republican Debates and wanted some opinions of the best way to phrase this question. It needs to be 30 seconds or less, and I'm fitting it in that mark quite well right now. Here's what I'm planning to say:

Gentlemen,

My name is XXXX XXXX and I live in Austin, Texas. I am 22 years old and a senior [here] at Texas State University.

After numerous hours of training and extensive state and federal background checks, I obtained my concealed handgun license.

I can legally carry my handgun almost everywhere else in the state, but not inside my college classrooms, where I spend most of my day.

Please answer directly: Should I be allowed to carry my legally licensed handgun on campus? Why or why not?

Thank you.

The brackets around "here" are there because we will be filming the question with one of our university's buildings in the background.

I would eliminate "registered holder". First, because "registered" implies something completely different when it comes to guns, and second, because it's good form to eliminate passive voice when you can. This is spoken word for broadcast, not a Buckley column, so break everything into small chunks.
I am also a registered holder of a Texas concealed handgun license. Considering that I am permitted to carry my handgun almost everywhere else in the state, I would like to get a direct answer from you all on whether or not you believe I should be allowed to carry my handgun on campus [, and if not, why you feel I should be denied that right].
"I have a Texas Concealed Handgun License. I have had training and an extensive background check. I can legally carry a handgun almost everywhere else in the state, but not inside campus buildings. Please answer directly: should I be able to carry my legally concealed handgun in my classes just the same as I carry it everywhere else? If not, why?"

Snake Doctor,

How are you going to title your debate question on You Tube? I'd like to look it up, along with responses.
"I'd rather have my gun and not need it, than need it and not have it."

I hate to be a wet blanket, but it is highly unlikely your question would get picked since you are asking about something that is completely a state issue and Im sure the candidates would all answer by saying that.

Well OK, Ron Paul would probably answer it but he is the only one with enough guts to buck the party line.

A lot of questions are asked at these debates that have nothing to do with federal legislation. It seems to be all about sensationalism and "gotchas."

I appreciate the support and thoughts from everyone who commented here, but I would love to get some more feedback. Even if you don't have comments and think it looks good, at least give me a

A friend suggested that I somehow incorporate my holstered gun into the video, but I said no. Would you all agree that is not the best idea, or should I have considered it further?

Yes. To some people, it would seem provocative.

Besides, it's a concealed handgun license.

That's exactly what I said. Someone will be too anti to hear the word "concealed" during my question and instead will just see the gun OWB, thinking, "I don't want him carrying a gun on his hip while he walks around campus!"

my handguns aren't licensed, although I am licensed to carry them
It's not gun control that we need, it's soul control!

Yeah make it "allowed to legally carry my (concealed) handgun on campus"

otherwise
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.

If I were doing this I'd pose my question in such a way that made me seem anti 2nd amendment. That way all the people that feel more comfortable taking that road will gladly jump right into it instead of posing some double talk middle of the road rhetoric. Only the candidates that really think like you would then give you an answer you're looking for
