CNN at it again - Handguns are more popular in US homes, with deadly consequences for children, study says

There is seemingly no end to the extent to which anti-gun people and groups will lie about guns and gun owners. Post links to articles by these masters of prevarication here.

CNN at it again - Handguns are more popular in US homes, with deadly consequences for children, study says

The communist news network is at again.
Fewer Americans are likely to own a gun now than 40 years ago, but those who do are more likely to own handguns over rifles or shotguns. As the proportion of those with handguns has increased, so has the number of children under the age of 5 who are dying from firearm injuries, according to a new study.

Every time a child injures or kills themselves with a firearm it is a tragedy. When they do wo with a firearm that was improperly secured or stored it is certainly a preventable tragedy -- one that a responsible gun owner should prevent. I therefore agree with the statements in the last paragraph of the article that re-iterate these points. Whether the study is worth the paper it might be printed on or not is a good question. CNN having a Statist, anti-Liberty, Anti-2A bias is a certainty.

Someone took the CNN article, read it, and wrote an opinion piece that is grossly slanted. There are several parts that are factually untrue.
You are not going to stop a crime. If you do stop a crime, you will be an extreme outlier to a trend that overwhelmingly results in the death of innocents.
The stats I've seen argue otherwise. The quotes I've read from criminals state they are more worried about a potentially armed target, than they are the police.

Why does the rate of firearm ownership have a strong negative correlation with child firearm mortality among African American families? There aren't thousands or tens of thousands of these cases; the complex web or circumstances that allows a child access to a firearm could be investigated from individual cases. Instead of looking at obvious outliers and producing testable hypotheses, we see goal oriented research with the explicit aim of supporting gun control.

The problem with this particular report is there doesn't appear to be any "scientists" involved. The lead person is a "family sociologist and demographer" from New Zealand (which BTW to her "mind your own business in your own country thank you. You don't tell Americans how to live and we might be willing to help you again the next time an Imperial Army tries to take over the entire Pacific"). The other two are just the usual academic hacks who are most likely progressive socialists.

For ages 1-4, drowning is #1, motor vehicles are #2, and "unintentional suffocation" us #3.
For ages 5-9, motor vehicles are #1, drowning is #2, and burns are #3.
For ages 10-14, motor vehicles are #1, suicide by suffocation is #2, and suicide by firearm is #3.

The next age group is 15-24 and less than a third of that age group are children.

LOL, gun ownership is higher than ever. But nobody in their right mind would answer the gun ownership question honestly to a random person calling on the phone "to do a survey".

Even then Statista doesn't show any decline:
Percentage of households in the United States owning one or more firearms from 1972 to 2018

There are now more guns than people in the United States (2015)
If that 310 million number is correct, it means that the first year of Barack Obama's presidency was an inflection point: It marked the first time that the number of firearms in circulation surpassed the total U.S. population.

Handguns are also safer than rifles, for a variety of reasons including lethality.

Put the people responsible for securing them, and are not securing them, in jail or prison and these tragedies will stop.

Period.

In the interest of keeping this forum clean I will not comment on what I think of the Clinton News Network.

Another data point. In 2016, 1750 children died from abuse, the highest ever recorded. And that's just the ones reported to CPS; studies suggest the actual number may be over 3,000. Where's CNN? Where's the outcry? The moms?

What I love is that author of the article completely dismisses the record firearm sales under President Obama. People like the members of this forum know from personal experience how hard it was to buy guns during those periods. The counter argument was that the same people were buying more and more guns but that ignored the record numbers of new owners in firearm classes.

It must be able to cherry pick your facts and draw unwarranted conclusions. Of course, we know that is by intent.
