New AR sight in

So I just got a new AR put together, I mounted a vortex red dot but haven't had time to sight it in yet. I have never had a red dot on anything yet, with a 4moa dot it should cover about 2 inches of target at 50 yards where I plan on sighting it for. What is an acceptable group for a red dot, I'm not expecting anything too great, but should I be looking for ~2-3 inch groups at 50 or more like ~4-6?

The vortex is a 4 MOA, which means the red dot will cover 4” of the target at 100 yards. With my ar, I use my flip up sights and get 1” or better at 50 yards, then dial in the red dot, it holds the same...so long as you have them co-witnessed. 4” at 100 yards should be easy.

Use the very tip of the red-dot, much like you use the centerline of a front sight - don't be intimidated by the fatness of the dot.

People set things up in different ways. I use RDs for either 10 or 25 yards, as an alternate to a 1-4x optic, or as a quicker torso-index at 50 yds.

If you want faster acquisition on a ~6" target(target area inside a larger target surface) at 50, or using a a Sig-style "cover-and-kill" on a 6" disc, you'll probably be happy. If you're trying for precision at 50, you probably want an optic.

I agree, I have 2 9mm carbines with red dot, and 2 AR style with optics. Carbines for close in work, AR's for not so close in work...

I sight in at 50 yards, but I do the same of starting off with my iron sights. Then it is easy to set the dot on top of the front sight post and be on the money. Then just learn your holds and it is easy to hit minute of bad guy with a dot out to 300 yards.
