Dick's Sporting Goods-Baybrook Mall
I had seen on the news this morning that Dick's Sporting Goods was open today at Baybrook mall.
Thought I would check it out, look for any signs, as well as compare guns and ammo prices to what I know from Academy.
The entrance then I went in, did not have any signs prohibiting open or concealed carry, so I was very happy to see that!
So I headed on back to the guns and ammo section, and noted that the standard target rounds of 9 mm we're about $15 for 50, which is $2-$3 more than the going rate for standard academy brand ammunition.
I checked out a few different guns, just to compare pricing as well:
Springfield XDS 45 caliber was $570 comparing to around $500 or so at academy
The Smith and Wesson M&P shield 40 was $550 which is about $50 more than Academy
The one that seemed the most strange to me, was the Ruger MKIII 22/45, which they had marked for $550, which I thought was way crazy, as I own two of them and paid $370 at The Arms Room and $340 at Academy a few years ago and they are still about the same price today
All in all, when it comes to guns and ammunition, the selection was pretty good for guns, and somewhat decent ammunition
However the pricing of both does not make me happy, and I will not be shopping at Dick's for any of these items

Re: Dick's Sporting Goods-Baybrook Mall
I got a mailer about a "grand opening" this weekend for the new Houston stores. The only really good deal I could find in it was a 325 pack of .22 LR for $19.98. The same mailer also included a $10 off coupon if you spent more than $25, so if you buy two boxes, and use the coupon you would get 650 rounds for $30, or 4.6 cents per round, plus tax. Not necessarily worth a special trip, but enough to get me to stop in if I happen to be going by one of their locations this weekend.

I thought Dick's didn't sell handguns or MSR's? Lat time I was at one near DFW they only had wood stock rifles and shotguns.Teamless wrote:I had seen on the news this morning that Dick's Sporting Goods was open today at Baybrook mall.

The coupons aren't good on sale items (I overheard a customer and sales persons interaction)Soccerdad1995 wrote:I got a mailer about a "grand opening" this weekend for the new Houston stores. Also, I don't see $20 for 325 as a good deal, when Academy (when in stock) sells 525's for about $20-22

My local academy had the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Performance Center for $429.99 a couple months ago... $500 seems a bit pricey for AcademyTeamless wrote: The Smith and Wesson M&P shield 40 was $550 which is about $50 more than Academy

If KKR still owns Academy, it is not Texas owned. KKR's headquarters is in NY. It may still have operating headquarters in Texas but it's not owned here. Nonetheless, I do most of my sporting goods business with Academy. I've never considered Dick's to be a discount retailer. I also think of them as more team and ball oriented than outdoors.bigge wrote:Guys I work for Academy and we will beat any competitive stores price by 5% we have been in texas since 1938.. we are texas owned and run out of katy.

Can you please take the 30.06 and 30.07 signs off your distribution center in Katy?bigge wrote:Guys I work for Academy and we will beat any competitive stores price by 5% we have been in texas since 1938.. we are texas owned and run out of katy.

Thanks. You saved me a trip and a frustrating argument. Their coupon does not say anything about excluding "sale" items. And I'm guessing most everything in the store will be on some type of "sale" since their having a big grand opening weekend.Teamless wrote:The coupons aren't good on sale items (I overheard a customer and sales persons interaction)Soccerdad1995 wrote:I got a mailer about a "grand opening" this weekend for the new Houston stores. And I agree that $20 for 325 isn't a great deal. What I said was that $15 for 325 (4.6 cpr) would have been a great deal, by today's standards. That's a moot point given how they are limiting the coupon use.

KKR still owns Academy. Also, last time I asked for a price match at Academy I was told they do not match on guns and boats.
The "we will not be undersold" is catchy though. Gonna have to use that one some time.

Wasn't Dicks the company that dropped AR15 stuff? They jumped right on that bandwagon. I think it really hurt their reputation. Academy has plenty of 22LR last time I shopped there at $3.99 for Aguila stuff which I like and they also had some CCI. Their S&W Shield Performance model I believe is now $459. I have one in 9mm and it is very nice.
If you don't like to drive buy ammo on line. Academy ships for free over $25 and you pay the same sales tax. I have never had a problem with an internet purchase from Academy and at least where I live they have plenty of 22LR on the open shelf. No, I don't work for Academy.
The other chain that sometimes has some very good deals on ammo and firearms is Atwoods. Check their flyer on a regular basis as they always have sales and discount coupons good for your next purchase.
Hope this helps.

The Katy store was PACKED today. The parking lot was full and people were parking in the adjacent strip mall parking lot. (this is a Dick's/Field and Stream/Golf place) Their gun counter is very nice with a wide selection of handguns , AR platforms and high end shotguns and rifles. They also had your typical Savages, Rugers and Mossbergs. They had a 1400/rd bucket of .22lr for $75 but their 535 packs and 500 packs were $34. I don't currently know gun prices so I can't compare. It is a very nice store and I will go back when it is not so crowed. I bet the gun counter at ALL stores will get busier the closer we get to election day.
