Perhaps Charles Cotton(administrator/owner) of this forum, will chime in. I believe a 1911 is his daily carry.....or was for a number of years.

And if a LOT of Texas Rangers carry them, then it's good enough for me.

I have both a Taurus full size and a Para Commander Elite. The PRa is just outside that price range but you should be able to find a Taurus in that range. The Para has been my daily carry for a year it has maybe 700 rounds through it. The Taurus was my carry gun for 6 years or so and it still goes out on occasion. It has around 5k rounds through it. Both pistols have been very reliable. I did have to replace the ambient safety on the Taurus after a couple years. I put a Wilson Combat safety in it. I use Wilson Combat mags in both pistols.

The Krag rifle is the Swiss watch of MILSURPS.

Until you are accurate and comfortable with any pistol it isn't "reliable enough to ccw." That said, if you can borrow one, or meet a member and shoot theirs, you will quickly see what the addiction is about. The 1911 is the purest form of pistol shooting period. You don't have to grip it a certain way, squint your eye, pray to the polymer gods, etc..

Seriously though. See if you can meet up with someone, I will go with you if you are willing to drive in the Houston area. I love my Springfiled XD and XDs, but the SR1911 is just a better shooter. The only drawback is capacity. Again, the only drawback is capacity. Hope this helps somewhat, or at least doesn't make it worse.

Everyone has varying experiences with 1911s. I've had the Ruger Nightwatchman Commander...not a cheap 1911....nothing but issues. I have a Remington SR1 Carry Commander...it has ran great out of the box. Go figure. I've had a few Rock Islands...and by-gummy they were all good runnin' guns. Regardless of what 1911 you get just make sure that it (regardless of brand) feeds and functions faithfully.

zimmerdesignz,

Please keep us posted on how well (or not) it runs after you've blasted it some...

My experience with every 1911 I've owned or shot gave me problems.

I know some guys buy them and never experience a single issue, so maybe I'm just snake bit when it comes to 1911s.

Modern pistols are less 'likely' to mess up, but they too can be problematic.

I had a Sig quite literally fall apart.

We went straight to the range. No cleaning or pre oil or anything, straight from the shop. Ran 125 rounds through it, not a single problem.

Are most parts interchangeable? Like magazines and such?

Yes but don't expect to be able to simply drop in upgrade parts as they often need fitting (thum safety, grip safety, trigger, etc) magazines should be interchangeable though some pistols prefer certain magazines but I've had perfect luck with Wilson combat mags.
Buy quality magazines and you'll be fine
