I have 5 DD214's all issued prior to 1979. All of them are one short form and say either "Character of Service" or "Type of Transfer of Discharge," (depending on the date of the form) and all say "Honorable" in those blocks. I'm not sure when the "long form" in addition to the "short form" came into use, but in 1978 and prior, there was only one form (8 1/2 x 11), and showed the type/character of discharge.

Mine, issued 80/05/23 is smaller than 8.5 x 11 and has sections numbered 1 through 22 (it shows the form version date as 1 July 79). I was never given a long form that I recall (although that was a long time ago). I'll be sending an SF-180 to National Records Center today I guess to see about getting the long form.

I think there may be some confusion here... you need to send them the "Member 4" copy. If you have that, you should be good to go. That is the one that shows the discharge status, e.g. "Honorable," etc.

Mine says "Member 1". Great, that should help slow things down! It's the only copy I got I'm sure or they would all have been in the same envelope.

I understand member copy 4 was only after 1 October 1974. Those of us who were discharged earlier than that do not have a copy 4.

I have 2 DD0214's. The 1st was when I was discharged to accept my commission out of OCS, and the 2nd was when I was discharged from active duty and reverted to reserve status. On both forms, one with an effective date listed next to the DD Form 214 lettering bottom left of 1 Jan 67 and the other effective 1 Jul 70 both show the type of discharge in block 13a if that helps.

If you have the Honorable Discharge Certificate (DD Form 256A) I am sure that would also be accepted as proof as the say DD 214 or other proof.

Member 4 copy of the DD214 (I believe) shows whether your discharge was honorable or not, which is what they are after. If your DD214 shows that, then you should be good.

As philbob stated, the government code doesn't mention DD214, it just says, "proof sufficient to the department." So your honorable discharge certificate may suffice. The document checklist they emailed after I submitted my application specifically mentioned the member 4 copy. But, as some have already said, that form didn't come into play until the mid-seventies.

I will be turning 60 on my next renewal date. Given that I plan to start the renewal process 60 days before my CHL expires will I still be entitled to the Sr. discount? Anyone had experience with this situation.

I received my renewal notification a few days ago and when I went online to begin the renewal my fee was $70 + the online fees...so yes, they do issue renewals for Seniors at the reduced rate even when the renewal is prior to your BD.

$70 is the regular rate... $35 is for seniors & veterans.
