Electronic earmuffs
I've decided to offer electric ears to my students for the shooting practical. I've had several students claim they can't hear my shot timer, which in turn caused them to fire after the buzzer. And of course, I'm using alcohol wipes in between uses for hygiene sake.
Is anyone else offering this ?

No shot timer used by my instructor. He had pretty good lungs though. Could hear every word he said. Does the shot timer add additional pressure on the shooters? Have you ever failed someone for not stopping when timer goes off?
Re: Electronic earmuffs
I guess I'm not familiar with this type of use of a shot timer. I thought they only kept track of the time a shot was fired after the buzzer sounded alerting the shooter to shoot. Can one also be used as a countdown timer that will buzz after 10 or 20 seconds or whatever it is set for?

Re: Electronic earmuffs
I do not offer electronic ear protection to my License students, but I do use them for myself. I have had students bring their own. I also use them for my Basic 101 class (no more than 3 students) so that they can hear instruction and I can them.

Re: Electronic earmuffs
Maybe be a louder shot timer? I use a little amplifier that clips to my belt. Has jacks for a microphone and my cell phone. Saves my voice in giving range instructions, and everyone hears the start/stop beep of the shot timer app on the cell.

Dunno, I use double ears and have never had trouble hearing range commands. Well except when we did our range time for the prison. Range officer stood a little over 20 yards behind us and up on a platform, and didn't have the lungs necessary to stand that far away.

Re: Electronic earmuffs
If you can't yell commands loudly enough, how about blowing a whistle for start and stop? Everyone should be able to hear that.

Re: Electronic earmuffs
Before I got my little belt amp, I used a short whistle blast for "fire" and a long whistle blast for "cut it the heck out". My nearest neighbor said the sound of gunfire didn't bother him a bit, but the whistle was annoying! I keep the whistle around for backup.

For the indoor range we use a wireless microphone headset with a small PA and speakers ( permanently mounted). For hearing impaired folks, we offer electronic hearing protection.

Thanx for the input, guys ! My shot timer offers a par setting in which you'll have a start and stop beep...although i do wish these "beeps" differed in tone (as they often get confused for start/stop).

Re: Electronic earmuffs
I have used the "fire" and "stop" method for smaller groups and for larger groups I use the short whistle blast for fire with the long whistle blast for stop. This would seem to work better than the timers, if needed I do have a hand held mega phone.

Get one of these.
When I was coaching my daughter's volleyball and softball teams a couple of years ago, they said they couldn't hear me when I would call them in or anything. Now, a few of you guys know me and know that I do not have a soft voice. I've worked on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier and can project my voice to be heard. Anyway, I got one of these whistles and they always heard it no matter what was going on. And we often have aircraft from Love Field and DFW overhead.
