What is a belt holster
Getting ready to order my open carry holster.
Did we ever reach a consensus as to whether a paddle holster worn over the belt would meet the technical definition of and legally pass for a belt holster?

Re: What is a belt holster
I don't believe that a consensus has been reached.
My personal opinion is that a paddle holster is a belt holster, but I am not offering legal advice.
A consensus of forum members doesn't mean that it meets the legal requirements.
That decision, I think, would be made by the Texas AG.

Let me try
A belt handgun holster is a crafted device comprises of:
i) holster where said holster is crafted to
i.a) carry in said handgun
i.b) said holster would cover said handgun's trigger
ii) a belt attachment apparatus were said apparatus would allow said holster to attach to said belt

Re: What is a belt holster
How does a paddle holster differ from any IWB holster? Technically, my IWB holster clips can be slipped over underwear, basketball shorts, any bottoms without a belt, etc... Using this logic, only an OWB holster that threads the belt through the holster would qualify
Re: What is a belt holster
In my opinion it is an oversight if the Legislature did not define "belt holster."
Why give LEO and the courts "wiggle room" in interpreting the meaning of "belt holster" when it could have been at least partially nuanced with an included definition?

Re: What is a belt holster
It is my opinion that a paddle holster is a belt holster, but it is my fear that it is not. I have one that I bought specifically for OC for its retention mechanism, and I have complete confidence in its ability to better retain my gun than any of my leather belt holsters. But until I see some kind off official response from the AG or DPS, I won't be using it as a precaution. I have zero interest in taking the ride but beating the time.

Re: What is a belt holster
From the above, definition, said belt is NOT required. The TX legis did not require a belt to be on your body, nor said belt handgun holster to be on your body. If you are holding said holster you are carrying it, no?Beiruty wrote:Let me try

I dare them to prove my "Beltster" is not a belt holster...

Re: What is a belt holster
How could a paddle holster not be a belt holster? I'm not the most knowledgeable person on the subject, but I have not yet seen one that wasn't designed to be worn on a belt. Now, one doesn't have to have the belt since it will fit over the waistband of whatever, but it's still designed with being worn with a belt in mind.

Re: What is a belt holster
I've read something somewhere about the open carry holster required to be looped in a belt and not clipped. I can't remember the source so I can't cite it but that question did come up and answered.

I don't think it was answered correctly if they said it had to be looped or threaded into a belt and not clipped.HKsig wrote:I've read something somewhere about the open carry holster required to be looped in a belt and not clipped. I can't imagine anyone not considering a paddle or iwb with clips like a Crossbreed not a belt holster.

Re: What is a belt holster
Today, I was at DPC, one shooter had a paddle holster, he did not had a good belt. The holster flew with the draw, it was embarrassing, not safe if he had touched the holster on the ground he would slapped with procedure penalty. Paddle holster with out a good belt are not safe, worthless and should not be used without a belt. The paddle is designed to easy un-mount the holster from the belt and or mount the holster on the belt
