Wow.. just wow.. This guy made someone upset. It sounds way worse than Mexico. I hope this gets a LOT of coverage.
Based on accusations made by Witaschek’s ex-wife, a gun recovery unit visited his house. Feeling he had nothing to hide, he allowed them to search his house. They found and confiscated a Civil War-era Colt revolver even though it is an antique and completely legal to own without registration. The cops also took a box of .40 caliber ammunition, but did not charge him at the time.

One month later on June 7th a 30-man SWAT team showed up at Witaschek’s house with a search warrant. They pointed guns at him and his girlfriend, forced them to the floor and cuffed them. Witaschek’s teenage son was in the shower at the time of the raid. The cops used a battering ram to take down the bathroom door and pull the son out completely naked. All four of Witaschek’s children were herded into a room crying.

The SWAT team tore Witaschek’s house apart, doing $10,000 in damage. What they found was a dud shotgun shell that misfired on a hunting trip and was kept as a souvenir, and the bass casing from a spent .270 rifle round. They also recovered a holster and a box of muzzle-loading bullets, neither of which are illegal even in D.C.

Witaschek initially faced 2 years in prison and $2000 in fines for the shotgun shell and the spent casing. Prosecutors offered him a deal to plead guilty to one charge of unlawful possession of ammunition with one year probation and a $500 fine. He rejected the offer as a matter of principal. A year after the fact, prosecutors added an additional charge for the first warrantless search which netted the box of .40 cal ammo.

Based on accusations made by Witaschek’s ex-wife,
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Interesting to see what the logic was for returning with the entire brigade for a second search. I'm betting its the gal in quotes again.

Am I the only one that read "weapon recovery unit" and get a chill down the old spine? Its reads like some dostopian sci fi B movie.

We (all US citizens) have no one to blame but ourselves. We continue to elect and re-elect the same type of people to public office which results in these types of laws and policies.

Yea.. And it looks like her claims were scorn:
She convinced a court clerk to issue a temporary restraining order because she said he threatened her with a gun. A judge later ruled that the claim was without merit.
However someone issued a warrant.

This will probably make some lawyer really happy.

Good thing there's no other crime in DC so they could spend a month planning this raid. I hear DC is really clean and friendly and tourists are encouraged to get away from the museums and monuments and walk the city streets because it's ultra safe and full of nice folks.

Not...we were going to take a trip once and a friend who was a travel agent virtually talked us out of it. She lived there for quite sometime and recommended maybe 2 or 3 hotels. She said we should not walk between sites if we could avoid it because there's a lot of crime in between the secured areas. Whether it's this extreme or not, I fail to find the value in this attack on this man and dud shotgun shell and empty brass.

It just boggles my mind... The conflict of the 2nd amendment and DC laws. I simply don't get it.

Never, ever, give permission for a search. Just say'n....

This is a perfect example.

Exactly. I know a lot of people feel like they "have nothing to hide" but why would you want the police tearing your house apart if they have no legal reason to do so?

And if they show up with a search warrant for your place be sure to read it fully before allowing entry (if given the choice).

On another note I'd like to know why a box of ammo and a relic prompted the use of 30 SWAT members?
