TRAVIS COUNTY vs. SAXET GUN SHOW
Posted: Mon Jan 06, 2014 1:08 pm
Members of TSRA got and email describing how the Travis County Commissioner's Court is trying to impose "Special" contract provisions on the owner of the Saxet Gun Show for the lease renewal for the use of the TC Exposition Center. The proposed provisions would require a NICS check for all firearms transaction, including private non-dealer sales. The provision would make the gun show responsible for violations of this policy under penalty of breach of contract actions.
They have requested action on the part of Travis County residents to counter this move TODAY. Action on the proposal is expected tomorrow at 9AM.
You can email at the addresses below or you can call, or both.

Travis County Commissioner's Court,
I am unable to attend your meeting tomorrow and therefore am writing to express my opposition to requiring "Special" responsibilities of the Saxet Gun Show in any contract for the use of the Travis County Exposition Center.
The sale of firearms between two private individuals is covered by both State and Federal laws which have been in force for decades. I have seen no evidence of any "Special" expertise which the Travis County Commissioner's Court posseses in this area of the law which could possibly justify your intrusion in these transactions simply because some Travis County officials have personal policy preferences which are contrary to any lawful private transaction.
I have attended the Saxet Gun Shows occasionally for several years with my wife and daughters. I have never seen or been offered the chance to participate in any illegal firearms transaction. If the Commissioner's Court has evidence that illegal activity is happening, then I suggest that they relate this information to the Travis County Sheriff's Office so that they can properly investigate, arrest, and prosecute any criminals so involved. I would strongly support such proper use of proper law enforcement against such criminal activity.
Absent such evidence, it must be assumed that these transactions are legal and are, frankly, none of your business.
It is unreasonable for the Travis County Commissioner's Court to carve out "Special" responsibilities for one lessee of the Travis County Exposition Center to act in a law enforcement capacity and be held liable for criminal activity in which they are not involved. Would it be reasonable for your to hold the Rodeo officials, Livestock show officials, car show officials, or ROT Rally officials personally liable for any criminal activity which occurred during their respective events? I suspect not. In fact, I suspect that you would find that interest in using Travis County facilities would diminish significantly if you were try to impose such responsibilities in their contracts.
Again, if the Travis County Commissioner's Court has evidence of criminal activity you should direct appropriate law enforcement officials to deal with it in a timely and effective manner. Otherwise do not use your official capacity to advance your personal preferences to the detriment of law abiding citizens.
Sincerely submitted from a watchful and frequent voter.
