In one January 2012 poll, the gender gap on "concealed carry" was a massive 27 points -- 59% approval among men, 32% among women.

We've got work to do.

All the women in my family are on board.

They didn't poll any of the women I know!

My wife and daughter both pack.

I think the worst part of that gap is the FACT that women are much more likely to be attacked then men. They are a much "softer" target primarily owing to (generally) a disparity in size and/or strength...so if anyone really needs to be proficient and armed on a regular basis, its women.

I converted my wife to be in favor of my concealed carry, still working on getting her to at least try shooting for the first time, then we can move on to getting her to carry. It's been a long process, but I have slowly eroded her objections to guns in general.

Guns and concealed carry were an easy sell with my (much) better half, but from her side she is practicing avoidance. ("I just don't have time to take up shooting", "Don't have time to take CHL")...we don't even have kids and it seems like she has no time for this particular activity! She is slowly coming around though and definitely sees a need.

We are sometimes our worst enemy on this one.

A while back when a thread was started about pink guns, lots of folks were against it saying they didn't want "sissy guns". When the owner of brilliant backstraps posted some of her work on another forum, she was flamed for it (I happen to have one of her glitter designs on my IDPA gun, it has the texture of fine grit sandpaper). We should be supportive of programs such as A Girl and a Gun and other women's shooting groups. We learned from this last election that losing the female vote is political suicide.

I'll even go so far as to say that the short demo that Jessie Duff did on Hannity did more for our cause than anything you will ever see on TV from a male spokesman.

And we shouldn't forget to introduce them to good sites like Cornered Cat. There's a lot of good info on that site, presented from a woman's perspective.

My wife and I took the class together, but she got her plastic in the mail before I did...

The Washington Times reporter Emily Miller has done a great job for firearms rights and showing that its important for women, as well. She went from never having shot a firearm to pretty much taking on the DC City Council on their over-the-top regulatory requirements for firearms...some of which she has won small victories on. I follow her on FB and though her only focus isn't firearms, she often posts on that subject.

I was at the range at opening last Friday morning. A girl with a gun class was just finishing up. I stopped the instructor and got a card for my wife. The instructor was excited and so was my wife. I'm glad that ranges offer services like these.

Who needs a firearm when you have a brother / father /boyfriend / husband to defend you right?

Seriously, I bet there is a significant number of "ladies" who base their opinions of firearms on this line of thinking, consciously or otherwise.

The smart ladies know the deal.

So do the smart gents.

She's supposed to be on again tonight. My daughter wants to watch. She missed her before.

Women are less intimidated when other women get them to try out shooting or discuss with them their fears of guns. A Girl N A Gun is a good outfit. More ranges need to welcome them in and help them attract women.

We need to remember where we are. Texas is very gun friendly, and many women grew up with some sort of gun around them or in places that are gun friendly. When you step outside of our little bubble, so many more women haven't even seen a gun first-hand. I support our local women's groups, but through the support of groups like the NRA, USSF, etc., we can hopefully start reaching more women in those not-so-overtly-gun-friendly areas. And there is no better example of a woman's need to carry than the recent occurrence where a guy broke in to a woman's house and she hid her children/herself in a crawl space. Listening to her husband shout, "Shoot him again, shoot him again," made my arm hairs stand on end, but also made me proud that she did whatever it took to defend her family. More people need to hear this example.

I can't make it through this call without tearing up. I sent it to all my girl friends, reminding them that they are looking out for more than just #1.
