Super Majority
Texas Republicans will have a super majority when they reconvene. I just heard on the news that a Dem from the Beaumont area is switching to a Republican. This will give the Republicans 100 seats in the Texas senate.

Re: Super Majority
101 seats actually and it is in the House.
There are only 31 members of the Senate and 19 will be Republican.

Re: Super Majority
The news might have said the house, but I'm sure they said 100 seats. Man, they can't seem to get anything right sometimes.
Wait. Are you sure its 101? If it already was 100 wouldn't they have already had a super majority and this wouldn't be a news story?

101 came from Sentor Dan Patrick's show this afternoon. Another Dem defected. Both of the dems were very conservative.

The question is, what will they do with it?

Re: Super Majority
We had better get voter ID.
The biggest thing is redistricting. The dems can't flee to prevent a quorem this time. With 2/3'rd they have the quorem.

Re: Super Majority
The biggest problem for the legislature this session will be the state budget. I wonder if they will have time for much else after that is done. Sorry folks, but that is the reality.

Re: Super Majority
Redistricing has to be done as well. And the budget and redistricting will eat up almost all the session.EconDoc wrote:The biggest problem for the legislature this session will be the state budget. Re: Super Majority
Well, I haven't paid close enough attention to know how closely House procedure follows Robert's Rules of Order, but a Motion For the Previous Question takes a two-thirds vote to end debate on a subject and force the vote immediately. Same for a Motion to Limit Debate, or an Objection to the Consideration of a Question. (I'd love to see them have the guts to Object to Consideration and make it stick on the birthday recognition and similar wastes of time.) That means the Dems can't drag out debate on meaningless garbage to keep later items from ever coming up.RedRocker wrote:The question is, what will they do with it?
