Before the elections, some people were saying that gun owners and conservatives should vote for McCain because voting for a third party candidate would hand the election to Obama by splintering the vote.

Were you influenced by that argument and how do you feel about the election results?

I felt safe voting third party in Texas. Since it was not close here, I felt my vote would do much more good going for someone that actually supports gun rights and small government ideals.

So, no, I didn't buy in to that argument. If I were in Florida or Ohio it might have been different, but probably not. Besides, it's better, in my opinion, for the Republicans to lose and then learn from this election. Maybe next time they can find a pro-gun candidate, perhaps even one who believes in smaller government. Then maybe there could be a real debate with the Democrats over the direction we want to take our country.

Honestly, though, if McCain hadn't been a proponent of banning private firearm sales and throwing away the employer-based healthcare system I might have considered voting for him. At least he was on the right side of the nuclear power debate. I guess the point I'm getting at is this was just a bad election, with no good (and viable) options.

I don't regret my vote, but I regret that no matter who I voted for, I'd be hurting myself in some way that was unacceptable to me.

EAch party now has major flaws that I really have problems with. This might not make sense to some, but I voted Democrat because I think the Republican party has a much better chance of becoming a party I can support. It needed a kick in the pants to start, and I wanted this to be it.

If your stated reason is to help make the Republican party wake up and smell the coffee, why didn't you just vote 3rd party? I assume that your dissatisfaction with the Republican party is that it is not conservative enough any longer? (If not, please correct me.) But if that IS the reason, then have you considered that by voting Democrat for the presidency that you've also helped to reinforce Obama's claim that he has a mandate to regulate gun ownership in any number of ways that, as a CHL holder, you're not going to like? If you had voted either Republican or Libertarian, you would have helped to counter that claim.

I mean no disrespect. I'm just curious if that particular aspect had crossed your radar when you were deciding which way to vote.

its no secret how I voted and why. McCain had it in the bag in Texas and Obama was obviously going to win the nation. McCain was no conservative, and shouldn't be allowed to call himself a Republican. He might have been a better choice than Obama but being a bigger donkey isn't going to get my vote. I voted for the only true RKBA candidate. McCain believes an assault weapons ban isn't a bad idea.

How can anyone regret their vote for McCain? Would you jump sides if your team wasn't winning?

I'm absolutely positive that we made the best choice.
Voting for the smart guy has always been the way we lean... this time no exception.

Why not? McCain didn't seem to have problems jumping sides when it came down to a vote?

A lot like Txmatt here. I didn't feel comfortable voting for a liberal like McCain and I sure wasn't voting with the communist party. I wrote in Chuck Baldwin and I feel very comfortable with my decision.

No regrets.
