M1 Garands, misurp and import bans

With the change in administration, I, too, have been wondering about the importation of any remaining M1s on loan overseas to be sold by the CMP. Are there any more M1s on loan, and if so, does anyone know from where and how many? Also wondering about the CMP sale of Army-warehoused 1911s.

M1 garands are still available from the CMP.

As to 1911's, from the CMP website:

The CMP is NOT authorized to receive or disburse the 1911s at this point. We have not yet received the approval required from the Secretary of the Army by the legislation.

Very true! I actually got a CMP Special and love it! But from what I understand, the supply of Garands with the CMP is finite and continues to dwindle. A fresh influx of a large batch of Garands from overseas would no doubt help alleviate any near term supply issues.

I thought I had read somewhere that the CMP is waiting for the process to complete itself so that it may have the opportunity to sell the warehoused 1911s. It was my understanding legislation wen into effect this past year allowing DOD to transfer a certain number of 1911s each year to the CMP if it chooses to do so. If my understanding is correct, then I was wondering if the change in administration would help with that effort. If so, I sure wouldn't mind collecting another piece of history if the price is right!

Might be heresy but I'd buy a Garand if it were in .308 - I really don't feel like having to hoard 30-06 ammo as well.

i didn't really want an 30-06 rifle either but if you're into milsurp the M1 garand is the one to get if you can only have one (it's the only one I have). And I have just enough M2 ball ammmo to make it a viable survival tool of last resort. It's not something I want to hoard either.

IIRC, believe there to be a rather large supply of M-1 Garands and M-1 Carbines still in South Korea that were not allowed to come home due to the stance of the current (but not for too much longer) administration.

The issue with the Korean M1s is that they were sold to South Korea, not loaned like those currently sold by the CMP. As it is the CMP is only set up to sell US owned rifles transferred to them. Being South Korean government property they would have to be imported by a private firm into the US. This is something that Trump could allow via removal of the import ban, but the CMP would not have a part in it.

I just checked and the CMP has Field Grade (mid level) M1 Garands for $630 and CMP Specials for $1030. Get 'em while they're hot!

CMP has M1's in .308. I got one about 5 years ago
