Not too surprising. That duty is frequently delegated to the Vice President.
Bush went to and spoke at Renquist's funeral. It's not surprising in that Obama couldn't be bothered to go to his own aunt's funeral.
Very rarely do sitting presidents speak at funerals.
Rehnquist was Chief Justice and had a long time relationship with the Bush family.

I am not trying to defend the actions of our current president, but it is clearly his decision.
I am sure that he realizes the political implications of his decision not to attend the funeral.
He and Justice Scalia were on completely opposite sides of the political spectrum.

I found this link that discusses some previous funerals of supreme court justices:

He's too busy running the Surrender to Terror campaign........

I completely understand that they were on opposite sides of the spectrum. Here's the thing though. This is a President who now is going to want his nominee to get a hearing. This is a President who as Senator voted to block 4 nominees and is already fussing about the senate possibly blocking his nominee before the Judge is even buried! If he went to the funeral he would be able to say that he was the bigger person, he "was trying to bridge the gap" yada yada yada. 'Course it would also have made him look more presidential if he'd have put on a tie to have his televised words after the Judge passed....
I miss Reagan.

I think it's a lose-lose situation. If he did go to the funeral and/or made a speech, he would be accused of being a hypocrite and pandering.
I agree that he should have worn a tie. I have read that Ronald Reagan always wore a suit and tie in the Oval Office. Even when he was alone. :tiphat:

At this point, ideology is irrelevant. Justice Scalia SERVED his nation with great distinction, humility, humor, and a keen insight, for thirty years and the presidencies of Reagan, GHW Bush, Clinton, GW Bush, and Obama. He DESERVES the UNQUALIFIED RESPECT of this president.

He has not gotten it, which given the general lack of class which Obama exhibits SO frequently as to be national joke, it is not surprising.

If Justice Ginsberg succumbs to her cancer eventually, and we have a republican president at the time, I would expect NO LESS from that president than I expect from Obama - regardless of her particular judicial philosophy.

This doesn't surprise me at all, in fact it was to be expected.
The man has no class.

At least he didn't send Bill Ayers.

The official reason was released today. Obama had to stay home to begin his homework on Justice Scalia's replacement. As if any person he chose could touch Scalia's boot laces. Seriously, knowing Obama will try to replace him with someone who will destroy his life's work, it seems even more insulting than not attending the funeral.

Oh that's rich. So he and his advisors sat down and said, "How can we get the maximum insult value out of Scalia's funeral?" Their answer was, "Let's say he can't attend the funeral, because he' has to begin his homework on Scalia's replacement.

I didn't think it was possible for me to get more disgusted by this guy, but I just did. He hates America and everything it stands for, and he's bent on finishing his destruction before he leaves office.

And now the American people are narrowing down the POTUS choices to a criminal, a communist and a complete buffoon. I suppose it's a fitting end to the great Republic.

Did Obama or his staff actually say that or was it sarcasm by the poster?

I thought that Justice Clarence Thomas did a great job speaking at Justice Scalia's funeral mass. :tiphat:
