Maybe so, but it seems too convenient for them to find something like that. Any intelligent person would expect a visit from the police and would not have anything illegal around for them to find. Of course, maybe he's not that smart.

Considering the totality of the circumstances, it's hard to imagine there was some other reason.

Maybe he's a nut case that takes mushrooms. When in doubt the most logical choice is usually the right one.
