I disagree. The GOP leadership seems to want to blame everyone except themselves for their loss, but so far as I can tell, selecting McCain as the Republican candidate was the action which accrued the greatest advantage to Obama.
I recently saw a bumper sticker that said something like, "IT TOOK A CARTER TO GET A REAGAN." We shall see.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen a Reagan.
I will admit I was 2 when the Reagan presidency ended but I personally think he was overrated. He raised takes increased deficit spending increased the size of the federal government and let us not forget about the Iran-contra scandal. It's confusing to me why when he goes counter to all conservative principals and is still head in such high regard by the republican party. Don't get me wrong he was a decent President, with good morals and values who was able to speak to and calm the american people better than anyone since FDR.

This has been my greatest fear of the Republican return to power. Last time the repubs were in control, neocons ruled the day.
I want us to run quickly away from this "progressive" government that looks for a government take over of any aspect of private industry that presents itself as a target. But, I don't want us to run into the nannystatism that neocons usher in. Do we really want politicians legislating morality and setting the country's moral compass? Those of you who were not poker players would not remember the UIGEA that was snuck in at literally 11:00 pm as an amendment to a port security bill, the UIGEA was never brought up on the floor and attached to "must pass" legislation.
I am SOOOO hungry for a candidate with libertarian views without the insane foriegn policy ideas of Ron Paul. This absense of a palatable candidate is making me take a serious look at Herman Cain..........man, I want a VIABLE candidate that sounds more like him.
I agree. Ron Paul has some good points about domestic issues but I'm a little leary about his foregin policy.I think he would be a better president than BO but theres better choices out there. Herman Cain on the other hand sounds pretty darn good behind that podium. That is gona be the true test of the republican candidate. I think Herman Cain will squash oh-blah-blah in a debate. Time will tell.
Well, I liked Newt and didn't know about his moral and ethical issues until this thread popped up. I couldn't vote for him just because of all that stuff, but have any of you seen the commercial he did with Princess Pelosi? It was about global warming. That alone should put the nail in the coffin of his political career.

This is going to sound weird, because I am a Democrat, but I really wish Newt had taken better care of his personal business. Back in the day when he was a young firebrand and still sleeping with his first wife, he was one of the most promising politicians in Washington (and I mean that in a good way). Gingrich is still razor-sharp and a savvy politician and I would love to see him challenge Obama, who despite all the invective and hate, is also very smart. I don't know who would win but the debates would at least be well worth watching. Sadly, I have a feeling Gingrich's personal peccadillos have left him unelectable. Maybe he could "pitch-debate" for the Republican candidate.
A government truly of the people, by the people and for the people has no need to disarm the people.
This morning Republicans are just beginning to assess the damage that former House Speaker and current presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has done to the GOP budget plan currently before Congress. On "Meet the Press" Sunday, Gingrich denounced House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan's plan to restructure Medicare, saying, "I don't think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering. I don't think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society to operate."
Gingrich just lost my vote.

If a return to a Constitution centered government is radical, then yes it is. The problem is that economy and balancing the budget is not usually conflated with "social engineering." Now Gingrich has gone there. He's obviously out of touch with what is actually happening in the world.

I tend to agree. I always defined a free society to be one that was capable of radical change without losing itself in the process.

I'd have no problem voting for Donald Trump. There is no way I would EVER vote for Obama becasue he hates Texas. Plain and simple as that.
Donald Trump is no friend of ours. Both of these are from The America We Deserve:
"...The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions."
"I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun."
And back on topic, no, I would not support Gingrich. He's too much of a hypocrite going through what we went through with Clinton in the 90's. He's also way too much of a neocon.
C'mon Tom....I know you can't believe Obama would be better for gun owners than Trump! In order for me to vote for Trump he would have to win the Republican nomination or run as an Independent. I'm not saying he is my guy from the word go just that I would vote for him over Obama.
Fortunately, we won't have to worry with that option. (Trump) He just announced he won't run.
