SB 359 - enhanced penalties for looting

Senate Bill 359, introduced by Senator Dan Patrick (R-7), would enhance the penalty for theft committed in a disaster area or an area that was subject to an official evacuation order.

This change would make a lot of petty theft a felony under these circumstances. Burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (Texas version of GTA) are already felonies,

This bill was erroneously described in one newspaper as enhancing the punishment for any crime committed in a disaster area.
