Reciprocity vs Permit

I understand what reciprocity is - we bascially all of the same laws and have agreed that we can carry in similar states.

What is a permit recognized mean - for example Minnesota?

This topic came up when 3 CHLs happened to meet in Academy and I thought we could carry in Minnesota?

Reciprocity does not mean that we have the same laws. It means that we have smilar laws, and that both states have signed a reciprocal agreement that they will honor each other's permits. For instance, we have reciprocity with Arizona. Texas CHL holders can legally carry in Arizona and Arizona CHL holders can legally carry in Texas. But the laws are not identical. Arizona allows open carry, but Texas does not.

Minnesota has posted on their state's website that they recognize the Texas CHL, but there is no signed reciprocity agreement with Minnesota. Texas CHL holders probably CAN carry in Minnesota, but their CHL holders cannot legally carry in Texas.

So, if we have reciprocity with a state, does that mean we need a non-resident license to carry in that state? Or does our TX CHL just automatically carry over?

No. Your Texas issued CHL is sufficient to carry in a state that we have reciprocity with, as it is honored by that state.

You are correct WestTexan. You are responsible for knowing and abiding by the conceal carry laws of that state you are visiting.

Yup, your Texas DL doesn't mean you can drive 80 on their rural interstates, and your Texas CHL doesn't mean you can automaticaly carry there in places that would be legal here.
